Baylor-to-Israel Pipeline Continues
2:44 P.M., MON., NOV. 21, 2011
CHRIS YANDLE (EMAIL)

Ekpe Udoh returned to Waco in August to finish his degree.

First, it was LaceDarius Dunn. Then, it was Tweety Carter. Now, it's Ekpe Udoh. Three-fifths of Baylor's starting lineup from its 2010 Elite Eight team has signed with Bnei Hasharon of Israel's Premier League. Udoh has signed with Bnei Hasharon and, according to Dubi Pick, is expected to arrive Tuesday in Israel and will play in Bnei's game Sunday night.

Udoh was taken No. 6 overall in the 2010 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors - the first NBA lottery pick in program history. As a rookie, Udoh averaged 4.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 58 games - making 18 starts - in 2010-11.

The Edmond, Okla., native established Baylor and Big 12 Conference single-season blocked shots records with 133 rejections in his only season in Waco in 2009-10. The 2010 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and second-team All-Big 12 selection averaged 13.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.7 blocks and 2.7 assists in 36 games. Nicknamed "The Nightmare," his 3.69 blocks-per-game average in 2009-10 ranks first all-time on Baylor's career list and second on the single-season chart.

Bnei Hasharon now has Baylor's top three scorers from 2009-10; Dunn led the Bears with 19.6 points and 4.8 rebounds in 36 starts, while Carter tallied 15.0 points and nearly 5.0 assists in 32 games.

#StatSheetStuffer with a Cool Pair of Bear Sleeves
3:39 P.M., THU., NOV. 17, 2011
CHRIS YANDLE (EMAIL)
Twitter: @BaylorMBB, @BaylorAthletics | Facebook: Baylor Athletics

If you watched Tuesday's Baylor/San Diego State game on ESPN as part of the College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon, chances are you noticed redshirt sophomore Cory Jefferson's awesome new uniform accessories. He had bears on his elbow sleeves. Seriously. I tried isolating Cory's sleeve in the above photo to give you a better look (my tweet was a little blurry).

Jefferson took a redshirt last season to get bigger and stronger. And through three games, that redshirt season - in addition to a pair of European tours with Athletes In Action - has paid dividends. Jefferson is averaging 8.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in 19.7 minutes off the bench. He's been a #StatSheetStuffer thus far, posting career highs for points, rebounds and blocks. He posted his career-first double-double in Baylor's 77-55 season-opening win and narrowly missed a second double-double Nov. 13 vs. Jackson State.

Credit Baylor strength coach Charlie Melton for helping sculpt Jefferson into a green-and-gold variation of the Incredible Hulk. Cory has easily added 15 pounds of muscle in the last 12 months and he will play a vital role in Baylor's 10-man rotation. ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla attended each of Baylor's last two home games and was very complimentary of the former Killeen Kangaroo standout.

So, he's bigger. He's stronger. And he's added a pair of pretty sweet elbow sleeves to his uniform attire. But just how much has Cory Jefferson improved between his true freshman season and his redshirt sophomore season? In 21 games as a true freshman in 2009-10, Jefferson scored 27 points (1.3 ppg), grabbed 25 rebounds (1.2 rpg), blocked 4 shots and played 97 minutes (4.6 mpg) off the bench. Through three games in 2011-12, Jefferson has scored 25 points (8.3 ppg), grabbed 24 rebounds (8.0), blocked 7 shots (2.3 bpg) and played 59 minutes (19.7 mpg) off the bench.

Stats don't lie. Nor do his sweet bear sleeves.

It's Always #MillerTime in the Second Half

Quincy Miller and ESPN's Brent Musburger following Tuesday's win (Matthew Minard)

I know of only one 18-year-old future NBA lottery pick that wants to one day become an anesthesiologist after his professional basketball career is over. And he plays for the 11th-ranked Baylor Bears: Quincy Miller.

Before I talk about #MillerTime, first thing's first: if you have a chance to shake Quincy Miller's hand, I suggest you do so. For an 18-year-old freshman, he has tremendous poise, great eye contact and he has a firm, vice-grip handshake. Now, I will say this: John Werner (Waco Tribune-Herald) and Jerry Hill (Baylor Bear Insider) both said their hands were hurting for a day or so after experiencing a #MillerTime handshake after one of our media sessions last week.

As for the photo up top of Quincy and Brent - that was a genuine moment and both were very complimentary of one another. Musburger was very impressed by QMiller's poise, composure and, of course, his team-high 20 points.

On to #MillerTime...

Through three games, the Chicago native is averaging a team-best 18.0 points in 24.7 minutes, starting all three games alongside fellow Quincy, Quincy Acy. Miller became the first Baylor player this season to reach the 20-point plateau with his career-high 20-point performance in Tuesday's 77-67 win over San Diego State during ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.

What could possibly be more impressive than his team-best 18.0 points-per-game average? His second-half scoring output. Miller is averaging 14.0 points in the second half through three games, shooting 67 percent from the floor, 71 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent at the free throw line in the second half. Based on second-half stats alone, Miller would still lead Baylor in scoring (Quincy Acy is second on the team with 12.7 points-per-game).

So far, the second half has been #MillerTime.

Beginning this year, I'm incorporating more and more social media into my every day use. For each set of game notes I produce, there is a column called @BaylorMBB Twitter Talk, highly influenced by a similiar production by the San Francisco 49ers PR staff. In my version, I compile some of the top tweets from @BaylorMBB and other tweets about Baylor basketball, while also incorporating short Twitter-like notes in 140 characters or less and complete with hashtags.

Some of these will be tweeted leading up to the game. As Baylor gets ready to host San Diego State on Tuesday as part of ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon Presented by Disney Parks, here's the SDSU addition of #tweetnotes:

Your (Almost) All-Inclusive Preseason Look
2:25 P.M., TUE., NOV. 8, 2011
CHRIS YANDLE (EMAIL)
Twitter: @BaylorMBB, @BaylorAthletics | Facebook: Baylor Athletics

244 days.

That's how long it's been since Baylor walked off the Sprint Center floor at the conclusion of its 2010-11 season. And it's been a long wait for college basketball. That wait is nearly over. Baylor Nation got a taste of what to expect from this Bears team in last week's exhibition game, but now these games count.

12th-ranked Baylor will open its 2011-12 regular season with three games in a five-day stretch, beginning Friday against Texas Southern. With the return of Perry Jones III and the arrival of Quincy Miller, the Bears received a tremendous amount of national preseason attention in the last few months.

In preparation for Friday's season opener, here's the (almost) complete rundown of all the preseason rankings, awards, articles and more featuring Baylor. PJ3 and Baylor even made Jay Bilas' preview in the latest American Way Magazine (official magazine of American Airlines). After compiling everything, one thing is certain: 12 must be Baylor's lucky number because the Bears are ranked 12th in the AP, USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches, ESPN.com, Blue Ribbon, CBSSports.com and DIME Magazine preseason polls. If I didn't cover all of them, I got pretty close:

NBCSPORTS.COM
PJ3 named second-team Preseason All-American ... Bears tabbed No. 3 seed in West Region of 2012 NCAA tournament ... Also ranked No. 9 in Mike Miller's Preseason Top 25.

YAHOO! SPORTS/RIVALS.COM
The Dagger's Q&A with Pierre Jackson ... PJ3 named first-team All-Big 12 and Big 12's Best NBA Prospect ... Bears tabbed No. 4 seed in preseason field of 68 ... Bears ranked No. 10 in Rivals.com's Preseason Top 32 ... Baylor has nation's fourth-best frontcourt.

SI.COM
Seth Davis
's Postcard from Waco ... Luke Winn has Baylor as nation's fifth-best frontcourt and 13th in preseason power rankings ... Quincy Miller ranked as No. 9 impact freshman.

USBWA
Baylor is No. 13 in USBWA's Board of Directors' Top 25 (highest ranked Big 12 team) ... PJ3 received three votes on USBWA Preseason All-America team.

ESPN.COM
Baylor is No. 12 in ESPN's Preseason Top 25 ... PJ3 voted to ESPN's All-America second team ... Pierre Jackson listed among Jason King's Top 10 JUCO players ... Andy Katz and Jason King have a rundown from Big 12 Media Day in Kansas City ... Dick Vitale has Baylor No. 12 in his Preseason Top 40 ... Eammon Brennan's video preview on Baylor ... Blue Ribbon preview (Insider subscription required) ... Baylor one of Doug Gottlieb's five breakout teams (Insider subscription required) ... Baylor leads list of top turnaround teams (Insider subscription required).

CBSSPORTS.COM
No. 12 in Preseason Top 25 (and one) ... Jerry Palm projects Baylor as a No. 2 seed against UTSA in his early Field of 68 for 2012 ... Both Jeff Goodman and Gary Parrish have Baylor advancing to Elite Eight ... PJ3 a second-team All-American ... PJ3 No. 5 and Quincy Miller No. 43 on CBSSports.com's Top 100 ... Miller No. 20 on list of nation's best wings ... PJ3 No. 2 among nation's top big men ... Miller at No. 8 among nation's top freshmen ... Brady Heslip is No. 14 on Top 25 transfers and No. 10 on Top 50 shooters lists ... Parrish projects Baylor as Big 12 favorite, PJ3 first-team All-Big 12, Miller third-team All-Big 12, PJ3 Player of the Year.

DIME MAGAZINE/SLAM
Baylor No. 12 on DIME Magazine's Preseason Top 16 list ... Great feature on PJ3 returning to school for his sophomore season.

All signs point to 2011-12 being one of the most exciting seasons in program history. And it all starts Friday night against Texas Southern.

Make it 'Five' for PJ3

And by 'five' I mean the number of Preseason All-America honors. Sophomore F Perry Jones III is among 21 Division I players named to the 2011-12 Lute Olson Preseason All-America team.

Jones III, the 2011-12 Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, is one of three Big 12 players on the All-America team, joining Texas A&M's Khris Middleton and Kansas' Thomas Robinson. PJ3 was not named to The Associated Press Preseason All-America team Monday, but was one of two Big 12 players receiving votes (Robinson).

PJ3 was named first-team All-American by Sporting News and second-team by Athlon, Blue Ribbon and CBSSports.com.

The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player who has played at least two seasons with his respective team. Freshmen and first-year transfers can be named to the All-America team, but are not eligible to receive the Player of the Year honors.

The award is named in honor of coaching great Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which were spent at the University of Arizona. During that stretch he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a national championship in 1997.
