Sophomore PF Perry Jones III picked up another preseason honor Thursday as he was named a second-team All-American by Blue Ribbon. That is Perry's third preseason All-America honor thus far; he was a first-team selection by Sporting News and second-team by Athlon.
Blue Ribbon released its preseason Top 25 on Wednesday; Baylor was one of four Big 12 teams ranked, coming in at No. 19 overall.
Here's an updated rundown of PJ3's preseason honors:
All-America, first team (Sporting News) All-America, second team (Athlon, Blue Ribbon) Big 12 Player of the Year (Lindy's, Athlon) All-Big 12, first team (Sporting News, Lindy's, Athlon) Big 12's Top NBA Prospect (Sporting News, Lindy's) Big 12's Most Entertaining (Lindy's) No. 4 PF (Lindy's) No. 3 Inside-Out (Athlon)
As the official start of practice draws closer (now just three weeks away), one thing has become perfectly clear: Baylor is becoming the popular preseason favorite to win the Big 12. On Monday, Yahoo! Sports blogger Jeff Eisenbergtabbed Baylor as his preseason Big 12 favorite on The Dagger, while naming Perry Jones III as a first-team All-Big 12 selection. And another preseason magazine with plenty of preseason accolades for Baylor has hit newsstands, Athlon Sports2011-12 College Basketball Preview.
Now, here are some of the things Athlon had to say about the Bears:
Sophomore guards Gary Franklin (Cal) and Brady Heslip (Boston College) were among Athlon's 50 key transfers in 2011-12, but there was no mention of Heslip on Athlon's list of Canadian players expected to make impacts this season.
Baylor is preseason ranked No. 11 - the highest among Big 12 schools.
Baylor is projected as the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Region; Athlon has Baylor as one of six projected teams from the Big 12 and later advancing to the Sweet 16.
Baylor is projected to win the Big 12 in 2012. Both Sporting News and Lindy's project Baylor to win the 2012 Big 12 title.
Baylor preseason All-Americans: Perry Jones III (second team) and Quincy Miller (honorable mention)
Baylor preseason All-Big 12 selections: PJ3 (Big 12 Player of the Year, first team), Miller (second team) and Quincy Acy (third team)
PJ3 (No. 3) and Miller (No. 7) were among Athlon's top 10 "Inside-Out" players for 2011-12
Miller was also listed among Athlon's 12 "Impact Freshmen"
QUINCY ACY All-Big 12, third team (Lindy's, Athlon) Big 12's Best Athlete (Sporting News) Big 12's Top Rebounder (Lindy's)
SCOTT DREW Big 12's Best Recruiter (Sporting News)
PERRY JONES III All-America, second team (Athlon) Big 12 Player of the Year (Lindy's, Athlon) All-Big 12, first team (Sporting News, Lindy's, Athlon) Big 12's Top NBA Prospect (Sporting News, Lindy's) Big 12's Most Entertaining (Lindy's) No. 4 PF (Lindy's) No. 3 Inside-Out (Athlon)

The preseason expectations and prognostications continue to roll in...Lindy's Sports College Basketball 2011-12 Preview hit newsstands this week and the publication picked Baylor as its favorite to win the Big 12 Conference. Lindy's also named sophomore PF Perry Jones III, who many believe will be an NBA lottery pick in 2012, as the Big 12 Player of the Year.
...but PJ3 is not on any of the Lindy's Sports regional covers...
Earlier this week, I blogged about Sporting Newshaving Baylor ranked No. 9 in its preseason Top 25. Lindy's ranks Baylor 17th nationally. Here's Lindy's synopsis on the Bears in 2011-12:
The Good: If the Bears are ever going to win the Big 12, the window of opportunity will never be so wide. Kansas and Texas are in what passes for their rebuilding modes and Scott Drew's roster is stocked with lots of talent - and much of it is of the "big" variety. Perry Jones III and Quincy Acy are key members of one of the country's top frontcourts, even if Jones gets to sit a five-game spell thanks to NCAA Sanctions. Quincy Miller and Deuce Bello were Top 20-caliber preps and Pierre Jackson was the top junior college point guard in the nation. The Bad: There's no delicate way to put this - the Bears flopped last season and, even worse, there were too many non-basketball-related things in headlines. A solid season without distractions is something this program needs. Our Call: If Jackson takes care of the ball and Jones is consistently forceful in the lane and along the baseline, this team has enough to make everybody forget the last one.
Despite that, Baylor is Lindy's pick to earn the Big 12 automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament, but the Bears are not expected to advance past the second round (Baylor not among Lindy's projections for Sweet 16).
Behind the No. 4-rated power forward in PJ3, Baylor has the fifth-best frontcourt in the nation, says Lindy's:
If the Bears capture the Big 12 title, it will be due in large part to the size and skill level of the frontcourt that Scott Drew has amassed in Waco. Perry Jones III was second only to Jared Sullinger in terms of freshman productivity among post players. He'll miss the first five games of the season, but fellow returning starters Anthony Jones and Quincy Acy...will hold down the fort quite well, along with J'mison Morgan. Freshman Quincy Miller provides remarkable offensive skill at a wing.

Here's the first look at the official 2011-12 Baylor Basketball team photo taken Tuesday afternoon at the Whetsel Practice Facility:
Back Row (L-R): Quincy Acy, Cory Jefferson, J'mison Morgan, Perry Jones III, Anthony Jones, Quincy Miller, Fred Ellis; Front Row (L-R): A.J. Walton, Logan Lowery, Gary Franklin, Pierre Jackson, Brady Heslip, Deuce Bello, JAcob Neubert.
With the 2011-12 season less than 40 days away, members of the Baylor basketball team took part Tuesday in its annual Photo Day at the Whetsel Practice Facility. Players took TV headshots to be used during all ESPN and other TV broadcasts for the upcoming season and took the official team photo as well.
Sic 'em Sports Productions was there to catch all the behind-the-scenes and even mic'd up senior Quincy Acy for the above video which will also air on Sunday's Inside Baylor Sports. We'll post the official team photo Wednesday, but for now, enjoy the video and behind-the-scenes photo gallery.
Perry Jones III graces cover of Sporting News' 2011-12 season preview magazine.
In 2009, Baylor was on no one's preseason radar. That team finished with a school-record 28 wins, a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight and ended the season ranked No. 10. Last year, Baylor was a preseason top-25 pick, climbed to as high as No. 9 in the polls, but failed to make the postseason.
And this season? With the loss of Baylor and Big 12 all-time leading scorer LaceDarius Dunn, preseason expectations for Baylor have now reached an all-time high. Sophomore Perry Jones III returns to Baylor after a sensational freshman campaign that ended prematurely with a six-game NCAA suspension. Three more returning starters (A.J. Walton, Quincy Acy and Anthony Jones) join a decorated group of newcomers highlighted by prep stars Quincy Miller and Deuce Bello.
About those preseason expectations...
Sporting News is the first preseason college basketball magazine to hit newsstands this week. And if you look closely at the above cover, not only is PJ3 front and center, but Baylor is ranked No. 9 on SN's Preseason Top 25...and that's after losing the most prolific scorer in Big 12 history.
Jones III is also a preseason first-team All-America selection, joining Jeremy Lamb (UConn), Harrison Barnes (UNC), Anthony Davis (Kentucky) and Jared Sullinger (Ohio State); PJ3 is one of only two Big 12 players on a SN All-America team (Kansas' Thomas Robinson is on the second team).
Not only does Sporting News project Baylor to be a No. 3 seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the magazine also projects Baylor to unseat Kansas as 2012 Big 12 champion. Here's how Baylor stacked up in SN's Big 12 preseason preview:
Projected Big 12 Conference champion (ahead of Kansas, which has won seven straight regular-season Big 12 titles)
Best Athlete: Senior PF Quincy Acy
Top NBA Prospect: Sophomore PF Perry Jones III
Best Recruiter: Head Coach Scott Drew
All-Big 12: Sophomore PF Perry Jones III
Here's a snippet from Sporting News that puts it in perspective for Baylor in 2011-12: First it was Ekpe Udoh, now Perry Jones III and incoming recruit Quincy Miller. Baylor is where future NBA big men come to play. Who'd have thunk it? With good guard play, the Bears will contend nationally.
