Where's My Broom?

KYLE CORNISH

What's good everyone? What a weekend, huh? Hopefully you took some time to come out and enjoy some Baylor spring sports this weekend... There were plenty of opportunities. From baseball to tennis to softball, you surely got your fill.

Well how about those Lady Bears? They swept Sam Houston State in the three-game series and... What? Yeah, it's impressive. Do you know how hard it is to sweep a three-game series? Sam Houston State is no pushover and let me tell you, they will be making some serious noise in the Southland Conference and pushing for a title. That team can play. But Baylor did what good teams do, win the games you are supposed to and take care of business at home. Sunday was very impressive because the charge was led by the freshmen... Yeah the little bear cubs grew up yesterday and helped guide the team to a win. Kayce Walker went 3-for-4, and Bree Hanafin and Megan Turk each had two RBI. Oh, and I am not sure if you have heard of Whitney Canion, but she pitches and is not bad at it. Even on a day in which she and the staff will tell you that her best stuff was not there, she managed 10 strikeouts.

Now you are probably saying to yourself, "Kyle, why do I hear so much about Whitney Canion? Is she actually that good or are you just trying to be a hype machine?"

Let me put this in perspective... After just 11 appearances and nine starts, Whitney Canion is third on the all-time list for most 10-plus strikeout games in Baylor softball history. She has six and Stacey Allison is secend with seven. Cristin Vitek leads with 13, and I have a feeling Canion will get to that number this season. Yes, folks, she will be rewriting the record books and causing me a lot of pain in a reorganization of the media guide next season.

Next up is Oklahoma Christian for a Tuesday doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m. Yours truly is hoping to hear a lot of the song "Shout" blaring from Getterman Stadium as the Lady Bears cross the plate. Maybe it's just me, but everytime I hear it, I can't help but think of Otter, Bluto and the rest of the gang in their togas dancing to Otis Day & The Knights. Well I am going to go work now (a.k.a. watch Animal House) Hope to see you at Getterman!

As always,
Sic 'Em

KYLE CORNISH

What's good everyone? Ok, before you yell at me for not updating this thing, please allow me throw myself at the mercy of the court. I implore your forgiveness... I have been extremely busy and I even wrote one yesterday, only to see my battery die on the way to Houston and lose the document... Sometimes bucketheads make mistakes. Well, with that out of the way, here we go...

Congratulations are in order for Whitney Canion and Brette Reagan. Canion became the first player in Big 12 Conference history to win Pitcher of the Week in each of her first two weeks and the first to do so in back-to-back weeks since a hurler by the name of Cat Osterman in 2002. Maybe you have heard of her...Meanwhile, Reagan was drafted with the fourth overall pick by the Philadelphia Force on Tuesday. The team, coaches and staff sat in Coach Moore's office and watched the draft online, waiting for her name to be called. Thank goodness we did not have to wait long, as an eruption of cheers could probably be heard all across the campus. I know the Baylor family is very proud of Brette and how hard she has worked to get to this point.

On the field, the Lady Bears have won seven of their last eight. After taking the Getterman Classic title this past weekend with a 5-0 record, the squad split last night's doubleheader at No. 18 Houston. Let's forget the first game happened and move on to the second one. Robert Shiekh got the chance to make three home run calls last night, as the Lady Bears received home runs from Reagan, Courtney Oberg and Tiffany Wesley... Yes she did! No, seriously T WES has power! She yoked one to center and over the wall for her first career blast, and I have a funny feeling it may not be her last. See I am a poet and I didn't even know it... But you should have seen how excited she got as soon as she realized it was gone... And you can if you check out Inside Baylor Sports this Sunday at 10:30 p.m.

This team is a lot of fun to watch, and even more fun to be around... Be sure to come out to Getterman Stadium this weekend as the Lady Bears take on Sam Houston State, who has shocked LSU and given Texas A&M all they could handle this season. Should be three good games... Well that's all the time I have, as I can her my boss now ...

As always, Sic 'Em!

Cool As The Other Side Of The Pillow
5:00 P.M. TUESDAY, FEB. 10, 2009
KYLE CORNISH

What's good everyone? Man, what a weekend! As you have surely heard, Baylor knocked off the previous No. 1 Florida Gators in their home "Swamp" this past Sunday. Freshman left-hander Whitney Canion was electric and virtually unhittable. How good is she? Well let me tell you this... She was the first pitcher to beat Florida at home in 38 regular season games. She struck out the number one team 19 times in 13 innings. She allowed one earned run. Oh yeah, and she did all this with it being her first two starts (she was just named Big 12 co-Pitcher of the Week today.) Eh, she is okay... Please get out your softball glove and catch the sarcasm.

What was the most impressive thing? Well I believe it has to be her mentality. She never got rattled and always had a cool, calm and collective demeanor. She wants the ball every time she shows up to the park, and folks, for the most part, she is going to get it. Please do not miss the chance to come out and watch her pitch. Over the next four seasons, I believe Baylor fans are in for something very special.

So you might be asking if there was anything else memorable that went on in our trip. Well... After the win on Sunday, we went back to The Pita Pit. (Ahem, Waco, please get one) Athletic trainer extraordinaire, Michael Deal and I ran by it one day during one of our early morning jogs in the 20 degree temperatures... Ya, that's what I said too... And we both said we needed to take the team there to eat. Deal spoke up and got coach to take us on Friday and we went back Sunday. Afterwards, we headed for the Jacksonville Airport and needless to say were running a bit behind. We arrived around 5ish and our flight was to take off at 6:15. Lucky for us, the flight had been delayed... Awesome. Well we waited to check-in our party of 31 people... And we waited... And we waited... You get the picture. It took us nearly 1:20 to get all checked-in. But we finally did, and the girls handled it well, well most of them (you know who you are) and we boarded and landed in Dallas.

We were all very thankful to see the friendly face of Mr. Ralph the bus driver (best in the biz) and we arrived home about 1:00 a.m. "K" Corner was exhausted, but the back of the bus was a completely different story...

Well that's about all I can give to you today. Check back with the Corner later in the week for a preview of the Getterman Classic this weekend. Sic 'Em!

But Coach Said We Weren't Going To Hit
12:50P.M. FRIDAY, FEB. 6, 2009
KYLE CORNISH

What's good everyone? Well we are just over four hours away from first pitch, but the hitting has already begun. Confused? Let me tell you the story...

Well we were on our way to Katie Seashole Pressly Softball Stadium when we missed the turn for the field. No problem right? Just turn around you say? Well, it's not that simple. We eventually pulled in to what looked like some form of recycling center, and tried to turn around by backing out. As we backed out, we inched closer and closer to a pair of semi trailers that were parked in front of the building. We thought, "Surely he sees them," and he did... Then we pulled forward and clipped the trailer... Uh, Waco, we have a problem. No real damage done, just the priceless look on the faces of a pair of workers who were standing outside. So one damaged tail light and some scratches later, we got to the field for practice.

The team went through some stretching and got to know the field. After some infield and outfield drills, we departed for snack at the supermarket and are sitting in the hotel as we speak, getting ready.

Get ready Lady Bear fans, first pitch is almost here. Tune in live as Derek Smith and I call all the action... Well Derek will call it, I will just try not to screw it up. ESPN 1660 AM or baylorbears.com at 5:00 p.m... Sic 'Em!

YOU ALL READY FOR THIS?
4:20 P.M. TUESDAY, FEB. 3, 2009

KYLE CORNISH

What's good everyone? I know, I know... I said I would be back with you very soon, but you would not believe everything that is going on right now. Basketball games, Signing Day and of course, the very reason I write this blog... Softball! So let's get after it shall we?

Well we just wrapped up final interviews before we head to Florida on Thursday morning, and let me tell you the team and staff is ready to go. There is a lot of excitement going on over at Getterman Stadium, but I must admit that the girls don't seem to be showing any signs of nerves. During one set of interviews, a group of about 12 players were tossing an invisible ball around the infield to each other and cracking jokes... Don't ask, just smile and nod.

So you might be wondering what "K" Corner thinks of this weekend's set of games against No. 1 Florida. Well, I will tell you that I believe the games will be won or lost in the circle. The Lady Bears have four arms (Whitney Canion, Shaina Brock, Brittany Turner and Jenny Isham) all ready to go. Florida will counter with a pair of great ones in Stacey Nelson and Stephanie Brombacher. The duo combined to go 67-5 last season, helping lead the Gators to the Women's College World Series. But don't forget, Baylor has WCWS experience as well... Yeah, that brings back memories doesn't it?

Well, yours truly has A LOT of work to do before we leave on Thursday morning. Derek Smith is so demanding with these game notes... That's a joke folks. I am very privileged to work with one of the finest radio voices in the biz. Make sure you tune in to ESPN 1660 AM on Friday and Sunday (baylorbears.com for all three) for all the live play-by-play. Until next time... Sic `Em!

Welcome To The Big Show

KYLE CORNISH

Welcome to the "K" Corner! It just rolls right off the tongue doesn't it? You didn't think KC was going to let The Pen and Full Court Press have all the fun did you? I would like to thank Wednesdays With Webguy for giving up his spot. Trust me when I say he cried for a week, but he just could not deprive you softball fans of all the fun this season is sure to provide.

Well by now you are wondering who I am, so let's get to the introductions. My name is Kyle Cornish (K-Corn, get it?) and I will be taking you through the ups, downs... Wait, no downs, just ups... of this 2009 season. You are going to get a behind the scenes look at everything that goes on in Baylor Lady Bear softball through the eyes of me and possibly a few guests. Want to know what goes on during road trips? I will tell you. Want to know what the team does before games? I will tell you. Practice updates, player insight, news, notes and all the fun can be found here at the "K" Corner.

Ok, now that we got that out of the way... Let's talk about what's been going on in the world of Baylor softball. As you have probably already heard, the preseason Big 12 rankings came out last week and the Lady Bears were picked sixth. KC thinks this might just be a little more fuel for the fire. In other news, Brette Reagan was picked to the initial "Watch List" for the eighth annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award. That marks the third-straight season Reagan has made the list, and she is more than deserving of it. For those of you who have not seen her play (which is insane to think of) please do not miss your final opportunity. You want to talk about a player who absolutely LOVES to play this game... You will see passion, fire and a determination that every coach and fan dreams to witness.

Finally, there will be an opportunity to head out and watch a little scrimmage against the alumni tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. It will last about an hour and is a great chance to watch a little bit of the 2009 squad and see some former Lady Bear greats.

Well, that is all for today... Don't worry, I will be back again very soon to break down the season and get you prepared for next week's opener at No. 1 Florida. What? It's exactly one week from today? Uhhhhhh KC has some work to do...

So buckle up and enjoy the ride... It's going to be a fun season!
