Verrett Making Waves in Cape Cod League
In his first outing, Verrett spelled starter Thomas Keeling after the latter walked four and uncorked five wild pitches against only two outs in the first inning. Verrett got out of the first without any further damage and proceeded to scatter one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings; he did not factor in the decision, a 2-1 Chatham loss (June 28).
Verrett was nearly as sharp in his first start (July 9), allowing one unearned run on one hit and four walks with eight strikeouts over 5.0 innings. He earned the victory in that game, a 5-3 Chatham win.
Elsewhere in the Cape, Verrett's teammate Shawn Tolleson is 1-1 with a 6.87 ERA; he has allowed 14 earned runs on 21 hits and nine walks with 25 strikeouts over 18.1 innings in four outings, all starts. Raynor Campbell (Bourne Braves) is hitting .238 (15-for-63) with three doubles, one triple and three RBI in 18 games; he also is 4-for-4 in stolen bases. Craig Fritsch (Cotuit Kettleers) has appeared in six games with two starts; he is 0-1 with a 3.44 ERA, allowing seven earned runs on 20 hits and eight walks with 14 strikeouts over 18.1 innings.
Chatham has not yet announced Verrett's next scheduled start. Tolleson is scheduled to start today against the Hyannis Mets.
Kempf Named TCL Pitcher of the Week
It was Kempf's first decision of the season, but he has been very strong on the mound all summer with a 2.91 ERA, a .170 opponents' batting average and 30 strikeouts against 10 walks in 21.2 innings over four outings (all starts).
Kempf's Victoria teammate Tom Filip also has been solid this summer. In eight relief appearances, the rising junior has allowed three runs - two earned - on 13 hits and three walks with 13 strikeouts over 15.1 innings. That works out to a 1.17 ERA and a .223 opponents' batting average. Filip is 1-1 with one save.
