    Baylor Family,

As the 2006-07 athletics season comes to a close, it is a joy to reflect upon the extraordinary accomplishments of our student-athletes, coaches and staff this past year.

Baylor won five Big 12 championships the second highest total in our history. This brings our total over the past four years to 16 Big 12 titles. Only Texas has won more Big 12 championships over that period. Nationally, we will have our third straight Top 40 finish in the NACDA Directors' Cup standings when the final results are announced on June 28. This will be the third-best finish ever for Baylor behind only the 25th and 32nd place finishes that we have experienced in the previous two years.

This spring was also the best academic semester on record for Baylor student-athletes. This year, a record 390 student-athletes were named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll which requires a semester GPA of 3.0 or better. The mean GPA of Baylor student-athletes this spring was 2.92 also a school record. Baylor led the Big 12 in both the four-class graduation rate at 64 percent and graduation success rate at 88 percent.

There were also fundraising records set by the Baylor Bear Foundation which supports student-athlete scholarships. The BBF set a new record with annual giving reaching $3,534,644 nearly $500,000 above the previous record set a year ago. Special thanks to our donors, volunteers and our outstanding staff. Moreover, we are grateful to the many donors who have made gifts to the Victory With Integrity Campaign including a number of capital projects that have allowed us to make incredible progress and get a number of these projects underway.

We are nearly complete with improvements to the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field that includes an ornamental fence, brick façade and new press box being added to the facility. The improvements to Bear Heights, Bear Place and the Skybox Complex at Floyd Casey Stadium are in process and will be completed prior to the season. Among the enhancements in Bear Heights will be new and increased seating, new flooring and wall treatments, and the addition of televisions and other amenities. Bear Place will also have improved and increased seating along with the addition of hand rails similar to Bear Club. The Skybox Complex lobby, elevators and entry areas will be renovated. Final plans are close to complete and ground has been broken on the Highers Athletics Complex and Simpson Athletics and Academic Center project. This project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2008. Finally, we are making a series of improvements at the Ferrell Center including a new sports medicine facility and a number of aesthetic projects.

With all of this momentum it should be no surprise that recruiting is going exceptionally well. I want to commend all of our coaches on the great work they are doing in attracting the best and brightest student-athletes to Baylor. From an admissions standpoint, Baylor is a "hot" school as evidenced by more than 25,000 applications for less than 3,000 seats in the incoming freshman class. The combination of Baylor's attractiveness as an outstanding private institution with a broad curriculum of excellent academic programs, a Christian environment, and the aforementioned athletic success, recruiting has never been better for the Baylor Bears. In turn, the future of our athletics programs will be very bright indeed.

With all of the success and progress, expectations will be even greater as we prepare for the 2007-08 year. I am looking forward to it being our best yet!

Thank you to each of you for your support whether it comes in the form of being a season ticket holder, Bear Foundation member or helping Baylor Athletics in a different form. Working together, we are experiencing unprecedented success with much more yet to come!

The following are the most recent round of Ask Ian questions.

    Ian,

What does the new Big 12 contract mean to Baylor fans who subscribed to Sirius mainly to get the Baylor games that come with it?

    Joseph Vale
    McAllen, Texas

    Joseph,

    Thank you for the question.

Baylor Athletics is entering the second year of its relationship with Sirius as its satellite radio partner. We have been pleased with the additional exposure that satellite radio has provided, and have received very favorable feedback from our fans and alumni throughout the country and around the world. We do not expect any significant changes as a result of the new Big 12 contract with XM.

    Ian;

How many season tickets have we sold for football?

    Lundy
    El Paso, Texas

    Lundy,

We are slightly ahead of last year's pace when we had approximately 12,000 season ticket holders. There are still great seats available and I encourage all Baylor fans to call the Athletics Ticket Office today at 710-1000 to order football season tickets.

The student-athletes and coaches are working hard to make 2007 a great season for Baylor Football!

    Ian,

First off let me thank you for all your hard work and support of Baylor athletics. I noticed that we currently have 7 men's teams and 9 women's teams. Has there been any interest in adding a men's soccer team to our athletic program?

    William L Garrett
    Houston, Texas

    William,

We actually have 8 men's teams and 10 women's teams (indoor and outdoor track count as two sports for both men and women). The Board of Regents has voted to add an additional women's sport in 2010-11, and that is the only commitment that the university has made to increase its intercollegiate athletics programming.

    Ian,

You should be proud of what is happening at Baylor athhletic wise. A fine job.

Haven't been back there for years. Last saw the football Bears on TV and they were wearing ugly solid green unifroms. Baylor used to have the nicest uniform in the conference. The one that was best was under Grant Teaff where they had bear claws on their shoulders. NEVER solid green. I hope we go back to having the nicest uniform.

    John Ecker
    Lewiston, N.Y.

    John,

Thank you for the e-mail and comments. Last season, the team used green and white, and green and gold combinations for uniforms. From the feedback that I received, fans were pleased with the uniforms.

    Ian;

Congrats on a great year with Baylor athletics!

I just wanted to find out what other improvements are going to be made at the football stadium. The banners from this previous year were very much needed and truly improved the stadium appearance.

Are there any plans in the works for the near future to improve the roads surrounding the stadium, as well as any improvements to the concourse (aka nicer restrooms, concessions, etc.) The Grant Teaff Plaza is very nice, but the concourse itself is in pretty bad shape.

Thanks again for a great year! I look forward to success in the football and men's basketball teams next year! Sic Em!

    Peter
    Belton, Texas

    Peter,

As mentioned above, we have a very significant project underway at Floyd Casey Stadium to enhance Bear Place, Bear Heights and the Skybox Lobby and Complex. In addition, we have a number of smaller projects including renovating the east side restrooms (the west side was completed a few years ago), concessions improvements, landscaping around the Stadium and some other aesthetic improvements.
