    Baylor Family,

The big news this past week was the completion and dedication of the Lt. Jack Whetsel Jr. Basketball Practice Facility. This facility has turned out even more spectacular than we had anticipated and its dedication ceremony was in keeping with the quality of the new facility. Last Friday, donors to the project and fans packed the J-Hawk Limited Practice Court to hear from President Lilley, Scott Drew and Kim Mulkey during the dedication ceremony. Thanks to the generosity of the donors to this project, Baylor is fortunate to now have one of the finest basketball practice facilities in the nation!

We held the ninth annual Athletics Director's Hall of Honor banquet in the Nell Hawkins Practice Court last Friday night. As has become our custom in recent years, the focus of the dinner was on Baylor student-athletes. During the program, 10 different Baylor student-athletes discussed their athletic and academic experience, and spoke about how Baylor has changed their lives. If you ever wonder why you donate to the Bear Foundation or support Baylor Athletics, this program answered your question. Your support is truly making a difference in the lives of these outstanding young men and women who are thriving academically, athletically and personally while they represent Baylor Athletics.

Speaking of dedications, the Willis Family Equestrian Center project is progressing well and the first four phases of the project will be substantially complete within the next couple of weeks. We look forward to completing two remaining phases of this project next spring and summer making this the nation's finest collegiate equestrian facility. There will be a dedication for this facility on Friday, October 20 at 2:00 p.m. which is open to the public.

We were very pleased with the crowd and atmosphere for the Baylor - TCU game. The attendance of nearly 43,000 was the largest for an opening game since 1975. Moreover, the fans were loud and enthusiastic, and we need that to become the standard for all home Baylor football games. We had a much smaller crowd for the Northwestern State game last Saturday, but it was United Way Day and we were able to work with the community to offer fans who otherwise would be unable to attend football games an opportunity to do so.

Student attendance for the TCU game was over 7,100 and included a record number of freshman students who purchased Baylor Line jerseys. These numbers are very encouraging and speak to the enthusiasm on campus for Baylor Athletics!

Congratulations are in order for head volleyball coach Jim Barnes who recently won the 200th match of his career. The volleyball team is having a terrific start going 11-1 through the non-conference portion of its schedule.

Later this week, we will be announcing the six-member 2006 B Association Hall of Fame class and once again it represents some of the finest student-athletes to ever participate at Baylor. Congratulations to each of this year's inductees.

The following are the most recent round of Ask Ian questions.

Ian, Congratulations on all the upgrades at Floyd Casey. It really looks great! In the recent pictures I've seen of the exterior improvements, I've noticed that by comparison, the light poles are eyesores. They have a lot of rust on them, and while I assume they're structurally sound or else they wouldn't still be there, I wonder are there are any plans to replace them or maybe put a coat of paint on them to spruce them up? What other plans for improving Floyd Casey are you hoping to get done in the near future? Keep up the good work!

    James Wright
    Dallas, Texas

    Jim,

Thank you for the e-mail. We have received wonderful feedback on the improvements that our staff has made to Floyd Casey Stadium over the past few years. I believe that Floyd Casey Stadium is shaping up into one of the finest football facilities in the conference.

We have a list of future needs and wants for Floyd Casey. Among our priorities will be increasing the premium seating, paving additional parking lots and expansion of the creek/tailgate area. I agree that the light poles need attention and we have them on the list as well.

    Ian;

When will the men's basketball schedule be announced?

    Kurtis S. Plumer
    Dallas, Texas

    Kurtis,

As you may have seen earlier this week, the men's basketball schedule was announced. We have a great set of home games and we are already receiving a number of calls about season tickets. Existing season ticket holders have been sent their renewal forms, while new season tickets will go on sale beginning in early October.

    Ian,

First of all, great job with the banners at Floyd Casey. Very well done; they really add a lot to the stadium.

I was wondering, since our stadium is off campus, if Baylor athletics has ever thought of talking with the city of Waco to encourage businesses along Valley Mills on the way to the stadium to hang Baylor banners, flag, and such along the way, and maybe have the city even build some small poles just for this purpose. It could look something similar to what University Parks does on the campus border, except better. Any chance?

    Larry Taylor
    Waco, Texas

    Larry,

Thank you for the kind words regarding the Stadium improvements. Baylor does work with a number of local businesses who fly Baylor flags or display banners, and we are grateful for their support. We desire to have more businesses participate and are working with the Waco Chamber of Commerce to encourage businesses to do so. The Waco Chamber has a program to sell banners and flags to businesses and please encourage business owners to participate.

    Ian;

Can you tell us how many season tickets have sold thus far, and how this compares to last season? Thanks!

    Marc Nelson
    Waco, Texas

    Marc,

We have increased football season ticket sales by approximately 1,000 from a year ago taking us up to approximately 11,000. Baylor is somewhat unique among Big 12 schools as we do not have student season tickets, so if we accounted for students in a similar fashion to our peers we would be closer to 15,000 - 16,000 season ticket holders.

I credit the work of our marketing and ticket office staff, along with the progress of the football team under the leadership of Coach Morriss for the increase in interest and season ticket sales.

I am a Baylor graduate...Class of 1970 and while I was watching the football game against TCU I noticed that the Baylor players had the letters TA on their jerseys. We missed the first couple of minutes of the broadcast and they might have explained it then, but I was just wondering what they stand for. Thank you for your assistance and as always Sic em bears!!!!!

    Judy Thurn
    Hunt, Texas

    Judith,

The TA on the football jerseys is in memory of former Baylor assistant football coach Tom Adams who passed away just before the start of the football season. Coach Adams was very popular among the players and staff, and he is being honored by the team in this way.

    Ian,

Can you give us any insight into the unusually high level of cramping our football players were experiencing in the opening game against TCU?

From prior experience, this seems to be a problem of certain supplements the training staff may be giving to the players. Do you have any info on this and what has been done to make sure it doesn't happen again (outside of normal situations)?

Thanks and keep up the great work!

    Matt McKinney
    NRH, Texas

    Matt,

It seems as though Coach Morriss and I have heard from every medical expert in Central Texas regarding remedies for cramping. The bottom line is that the players need to take responsibility for being properly hydrated and apparently that was not the case for everyone during the TCU game. I understand that we did not have any cramping problems last week against Northwestern State.

    Ian,

Let me congratulate you and your staff for the appearance of FCS this weekend. Also, my wife and I happened by the new basketball facility and it looks great.

My question is when and where are they going to be selling current team football jerseys. The only ones they had under the stadium were the old ones, except for kids sizes. The same scenario at the Baylor Bookstore and I was told they would not be getting any others.

I know our merchandise marketing has had a lot to be desired in the past but I do see things changing a bit.

Thanks for all you do for Baylor.

    Mark Hollis
    Houston, Texas

    Mark,

Thank you for the kind comments. We continue to work with Follet who operates the Baylor Bookstore and supplies the store on game days. There has been some improvement in merchandise such as dri-fit Nike polo shirts and replica jerseys, but obviously we still have some challenges to overcome in this area.

I can assure you that it is not from lack of effort on the part of our staff. Our staff has been told that the jerseys are on back order and should be delivered sometime in the near future.
