WACO, Texas -
Baylor University Director of Athletics Ian McCaw has promoted Doug Smith, the Executive Director of the Bear Foundation, to the position of Associate Athletic Director for Development. Smith has led the Athletic Department's fundraising activities since July 1998.
"Doug has distinguished himself as an outstanding development professional over the past five years at Baylor," McCaw said. "His tireless efforts and dedication have earned strong and widespread praise from the Bear Foundation leadership and the Baylor community."
Recognized nationally for his development of the "team concept" approach to athletic fundraising, his program of involving volunteers has resulted in over $11 million being pleged to the Baylor Bear Foundation in annual giving since its inception.
A 27-year veteran of the athletic fundraising profession, Smith's efforts have helped the institutions he has served raise more than $47 million in annual funds. Before joining the Baylor staff, Smith worked at Rice, Oklahoma, SMU, New Mexico, Pacific, Cal State Fullerton and his alma mater, Kent State.
One of his biggest success stories came at the University of Oklahoma, where he administered the entire athletic development program, which included annual giving, major gifts, special projects, skysuites, deferred giving, gifts-in-kind, marketing, promotions and licensing. Total revenue from that area was more than $5 million annually.
The 1990 National Athletic Fundraiser of the Year, Smith is a founding member of the National Athletic Fundraising Association and a founding board member of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors.
