Nick Joos joined the Baylor athletics staff in October 2003 and serves as the department's Associate Athletic Director for Communications. Joos, in his 20th year working in intercollegiate athletics, oversees media relations, BaylorVision and broadcast operations for the school's 18-sport program. He serves as the primary media contact for the football team and is the sport administrator for men's golf. The Baylor Athletic Media Relations Office has received 19 CoSIDA publication awards over the last two years, including a school-record 14 citations during the 2005-06 academic year. Joos joined the Baylor staff after a brief tenure at the University of Minnesota, where he was the director of athletic media relations. Prior to his stint with the Golden Gophers, Joos spent three years directing the media relations office at Massachusetts, where he worked for one year under Baylor Director of Athletics Ian McCaw. He served two years as assistant athletic director for media relations before being name associate athletic director his final year. At UMass, Joos oversaw all public relations activities and information services for the 23-sport athletic program. During his UMass tenure, Joos oversaw a successful redesign of the department's website, served as the executive editor of the department's monthly donor publication, The Maroon and White, and was the primary media contact for the men's basketball program. Massachusetts' 2000 and 2001 football media guides received Citation for Excellence awards being judged as the nation's second-best I-AA football media guide by the College Sports Information Directors of America. A native of West Des Moines, Iowa, Joos called the University of Nebraska home for 13 years before moving to New England. After graduating from Iowa State University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communications and working as a student assistant in the Cyclone sports information office, Joos began his career at Nebraska. He spent one year as an intern (1987-88) in the Husker sports information office, then served as assistant sports information director (1988-94) and associate director (1994-95) for the Cornhuskers. At Nebraska, Joos served as the media relations contact for men's basketball and men's and women's track & field. He was the secondary football contact during his final two years in the office, and worked with the Huskers' 1994 national championship team. All-told, he assisted with eight Husker football teams which earned bowl bids and 10 basketball teams which captured postseason invitations. Joos' final five years at Nebraska were spent as the director of men's basketball operations, where his duties included managing the program's budget, coordinating team travel, scheduling and community relations. During his Nebraska career, he also served as the executive producer of the Danny Nee Television Show for 11 years and handled color commentary on Husker men's basketball radio broadcasts for seven seasons. Joos was also a press officer at the 1991 Pan American Games and the 1989 and 1990 U.S. Olympic Festivals and was worked numerous NCAA Championship events in his career. A member of the CoSIDA Academic All-America committee, Joos completed a three-year term as an at-large member of the organization in July 2006. He serves as CoSIDA's second Vice President and will be President of the organization in 2008-09. Joos and his wife, Jill, are the parents of two children, Christopher and Jenna. |
