Sherri Smith, a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, is in her second year as track and field graduate assistant coach at Baylor. She also serves as assistant coach for the cross country team after turning in four fine seasons as a member of the Baylor track and cross country teams.

Most will probably remember Smith from her remarkable Baylor track career. One of the leaders on the Baylor distance crew, Smith etched her name in the record books with outstanding performances during the cross country, indoor and outdoor track seasons. In 1998, Smith claimed the Big 12 Cross Country Championship title. From there, she finished 20th at the NCAA Championships.

The following track season, Smith received indoor all-America honors after placing eighth in the 5,000 meters and setting the second best time in school history (16:13.36). She received outdoor all-America accolades as well with a sixth place finish in the 10,000 meters (34:20.03). In the outdoor season, Smith set the school record in the 5,000 meters with a race-winning 16:10.62 at the Drake Relays. She also won the Big 12 title in the 10,000.

Smith received her degree in history from Baylor in May of 1999. She is currently working on her master’s degree.
