COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Baylor's track and field team opened the 2013 indoor season by winning five events at the Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational on Saturday at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium.

"I thought it was a good day overall for us," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We had a few wins today, some meet records and a lot of personal bests."

In the team competition, the Baylor women and men were both second for a second straight year. The women scored 108 points, while the men finished with 83. Texas A&M won both titles with scores of 145 for the women and 111.50 for the men.

Junior Tiffani McReynolds set the tone for Baylor early on the track as she established a meet record, while winning her second-straight 60-meter hurdles title at the Texas A&M Invitational in 8.22. That mark ties for the eighth fastest in BU history and is currently the fourth fastest in the NCAA this year.

Freshman Felix Obi opened the scoring for BU in the field events as he recorded a jump of 50-7.25 in his debut to win the triple jump crown. The leap currently ranks fourth-best in the NCAA and the second-best in program history.

Baylor's field event success continued as senior Skylar White also repeated as a champion at the meet in the shot put. The All-American hurled the fifth-best throw of her career at 55-0.75 to currently rank fifth in the NCAA. Another repeat winner for the Lady Bears at the event was Erin Atkinson in the weight throw. The junior set a meet record with a toss of 63-3.5. It was also the fifth-best throw of her career.

The final win of the day for Baylor came from the women's distance medley relay team. Rachel Johnson, Katelyn Cranfill and Ivorie Walker kept Baylor even with Texas A&M through the first three legs of the race and then Mariah Kelly pulled away in the final 1600-meters to take the title in a time of 11:58.97.

Baylor's women got a big boost from its trio of 60-meter hurdles. In addition to McReynolds taking the crown, senior Christina Holland set a personal best with a time of 8.51 to finish second and freshman Taije Jordan was third with in 8.61.

Junior Justine Charbonnet established a personal-best time of 7.61 in the preliminary round of the 60-meter dash and then went on to finish sixth in the finals running a 7.62. Freshman Kehri Jones also got two points for the Lady Bears in the event by finishing seventh in 7.68.

On the men's side in the 60-meters, Everett Walker ran the fastest qualifying time (6.72) at the event and then he bettered it by .02 in the finals to register a personal-record time of 6.70. However, the senior had three other competitors finish in front of him and had to settle for fourth. Walker also had a strong showing with a fifth-place finish in the 200-meters in a time of 21.25.

The men's 400-meter runners showed potential with all three of BU's entries finishing in the top-six. Blake Heriot was edged at the finish line to fall just .04 seconds short of the top spot with a time of 47.52. Freshman Isaiah Duke debuted with a third-place time of 47.91, while senior Drew Seale was sixth in 48.90.

Freshman Angela Tharpe turned in an impressive first showing with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meters in a time of 2:19.24.

All-Big 12 cross country performer, Rachel Johnson made the switch back to the track look easy as the sophomore posted a fifth-place finish in the mile run with a time of 5:03.93. On the men's side Taylor Jackson turned in a time of 4:21.99 in the event to take seventh.

BU was strong on both the men's and women's side in the three kilometer event. Bree Schrader tallied a runner-up finish with a time of 9:59.55 and Brad Miles closed strong to take second in a time of 8:30.17.

In the field events, Baylor was led by underclassmen on the men's side and a mixture of veterans and newcomers on the women's side. Besides Obi's win in the triple jump, the freshman also took second in the long jump, posting a jump of 23-3.5. Another freshman, Allex Austin, tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 6-9. Sophomore Desmine Hilliard posted a personal-record throw of 53-9.75 in the shot put to take fifth place.

Along with White's title in the shot put, freshman Brianna Richardson recorded a second-place finish in the long jump with a jump of 19-0.5. Sophomore Jasmine Adekoya's hurl of 54-2.5 in the weight throw was good for sixth place. Sophomore Lauren Cook tied her personal-record with an effort of 5-5 in the high jump, which was good for seventh at the meet.

"I thought we exceeded expectation in some of our technical events where we haven't gotten a lot of practice time," Harbour said. "The jumpers, the hurdlers and the throwers haven't been able to get a lot of work in and I thought they did a good job."

Baylor will have a week off before traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 25-26. For updates and information check and follow the team on twitter @BaylorTrack.
