NORMAN, Okla. - There is a reason Baylor is known as Quarter Mile U., and the Bears proved why here Saturday at the Sooner Indoor Classic, winning the men's 400 meters and both mile relays. On top of that, Baylor also finished first in the men's 600 yards, the men's 800 meters and the men's 1,000 meters to leave the Mosier Indoor Facility with six first-place finishes on the day in the non-team-scoring meet.

In the men's 400, the Bears dominated with four of the top eight finishers. Sophomore Zsolt Szeglet led the way with a first-place time of 48.45 seconds. Bayano Kamani took third with a time of 48.94 seconds, while Joel Martin (49.82) and Robert Ouiroya (50.57) placed sixth and eighth, respectively.

Baylor also dominated the men's 600 yards with four of the top six finishers, including a 1-2-3 finish. Floyd Thompson was in the front with a time of one minute, 11.92 seconds. Damian Davis was on his heels at 1:12.37, and Ryan Kedley finished third at 1:13.12. Michael Smith placed sixth with a time of 1:14.07

In the men's 800 meters, Barrett Hall blistered the field with a time of 1:56.24, Brad Muhlenkamp of Texas-Arlington finished more than three seconds behind in second. Nick Devenport gave Baylor a fourth individual first-place finish on the men's side, capturing the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:28.98. Teammates Jon Capron (2:30.21) and Blair Mathews (2:30.80) finished second and third, respectively.

Baylor also finished first in the 4x440-yard relay with a time of 3:16.23, more than a full second ahead of the second-place Texas Christian team. The Bears' "B" team finished fifth in the event with a time of 3:19.88. Sherman Harness finished second in the high jump at 2.07 meters. Baylor also saw four athletes place in the top seven of the pole vault, led by Jim Autenreith in thierd at 5.20 meters. Charley Donaldson finished fourth at 5.05, while T.J. Henderson (4.90) and Sky Jones (4.75) took fifth and seventh, respectively.

The Bears' fate in the men's 4x440 relay was its fate in the women's race, the women took first with a time of 3:51.25, edging TCU by two tenths of a second. Baylor's highest individual finisher on the women's side was Tiffany Wise, whose time of 1:25.42 in the 600 yards was good enough for second place. Lanie Millar (1:25.79) finished third in the 600, while Udi Deja Opusunju (1:27.75) finished fourth.

Three Baylor athletes finished in the top eight of the women's 800 meters, led by Stephanie Bennett's third-place time of 2:21.27. Amber Markert (2:27.02) finished sixth, and Leah Marbach (2:30.98) took seventh.

Baylor also saw strong performances in other women's events: Ssereta Lafayette (200 meters, fourth, 25.02), Chava Demart (400 meters, fourth, 58.98), Kara Newton (mile, fourth, 5:07.56, 3,000 meters, fourth, 10:02.79), Bennett (mile, fifth, 5:08.03), Cynthia Benson (high jump, fourth, 1.63 meters), Rachel Roessler (weight throw, third, 14.30 meters, shot put, seventh, 12.70 meters).

Other's placing in the top eight in men's events were as follows: Ferenc Bekesi (mile, second, 4:18.09, 3,000 meters, fourth, 8:46.18), Matt Chance (mile, fourth, 4:22.79), Alex Adler (mile, sixth, 4:25.27, 3,000 meters, 8:56.40), Jeff Dacunha (shot put, sixth, 12.84 meters).

Baylor will return to action next weekend at the Southwest Indoor Classic, hosted by the University of Houston. Events will get underway Friday and conclude Saturday.
