The Baylor Bears had a solid showing in their second meet of the indoor season, competing at the Red Raider Open held at the Athletic Training Center in Lubbock Texas.
Head coach Clyde Hart was pleased with his team's performance saying: "It was a good meet. We showed a lot of improvement from the first to the second meet. The kids competed well, but we still have a long way to go and we need to get better. It was good to come out and perform like we did away from home."
All-American Darold Williamson recorded a provisionally qualifying time of 46.62 to take the title in the 400-meters. In the same race, newcomer Jeremy Wariner recorded a provisional time of 46.97 to finish third, behind former Bear Brandon Couts. Williamson also anchored the 4x400 relay team that clocked a provisional mark of 3:07.79. Wariner, Robbie Quiroga and Brian McDonald joined Williamson on the first-place relay squad. On the women's side, Lakadron Ivery had a stellar meet. She took second in the long jump with a provisional mark of 20-4¼. She also won the 55-meter race with a time of 7.06. Ivery took third in the 200, clocking a 24.71.
Both the men's and women's distance medley relay teams recorded victories. The men clocked a 10:17.21, while the women finished in 11:57.05.
The men took the top two places in both the 600-yards and 5,000-meters. Newcomers McDonald (1:11.14) and Seth Billy (1:11.92) recorded the top two times in the 600 while Matt Chance (15:14.49) and Rob Morrow (15:22.72) paced the pack in the 5,000. Another top performance came from Nick Devenport, who won the 1,000 with a time of 2:26.48. Newcomer Will Fitts also had a strong showing. After taking second in the 800 in his first collegiate meet, he repeated his performance clocking a 1:51.81 to finish second. Kyle King also recorded a second place finish, clocking a time of 4:13.39 in the mile. In the 3,000-meters Bo Price recorded an 8:44.04 to take third.
All-American
Barbara Petrahn recorded the first victory of the day for the Baylor women. She completed the 600-yard run in 1:22.33 to take the title.
Tiffany Wise took third in the event, clocking a 1:26.57.
Katherine Duncan also chalked up a w, winning the 1,000 with a time of 3:01.46. Baylor also took third in that race as Stephanie Bennet crossed the finish line in 3:08.17. All-American
April Holliness continued to perform well in the field for the Bears. With a leap of 20-¼, she placed third in the long jump.
Janelle Mulkey clocked an 8.23 to place third in the 55 hurdles. With a time of 4:53.24,
Debbie Thornhill placed third in the mile. All-American
Danielle Myricks also recorded a third-place finish, achieving the place with a time of 56.60 in the 400. In the 3,000-meters,
Megan McCoin took third clocking a 10:18.33.
Baylor track and field will take a weekend off, returning to action Feb. 8 at the Mountain T's Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz.
