The Baylor track and field team opened the outdoor campaign today with its first home meet of the season. Bears took the top place in 16 of the 36 events at the Dr Pepper Invitational, held at the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex.

The Bears opened the day with three individual titles in the field events. Ron Beauford won the men's javelin with a throw of 57.02 meters. With a leap of 6.25 meters, All-American April Holliness took the title in the long jump. The third field event title was won by Eboni Hammond. She won the discus with a mark of 42.20 meters.

The men had a solid day on the track. Bears took the top four places in the 1,500-meter run as well as finishing first through third in the 800 and 400 hurdles. Nick Devenport took the title in the 1,500 with a time of 3:53.56. He was followed to the finish line by Sam Bernal (3:59.77), Rob Morrow (3:59.93) and Jon Capron (4:01.04). The Baylor men also took the top three places in the 800 as Wil Fitts (1:52.92) crossed the line first followed by Alex Altaffer (1:53.89) and Capron (1:54.66). Seth Billy won the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.79. Brian McDonald (52.56) finished second, and Jordan Lewis (52.77) took third. Other first place finishers for the men included Mark Henkes in the 110 high hurdles (14.91), Matt Chance in the 3,000 (8:26.39) and the 1,600 relay quartet of Billy, Robbie Quiroga, McDonald and Fitts (3:48.53).

 

 

The women took seven titles on the track. The only 1-2 finish on the women's side came in the 3,000-meter run. Stephanie Bennett crossed the finish line in 10:0.57 to take first followed by Megan McCoin (10:08.78) in second. Lakadron Ivery, who set indoor school records in the 60 and 200, came close to the outdoor mark in the 100, winning the event with a time of 11:54. With a time of 14.41, Janelle Mulkey placed first in the 100 hurdles. Tiffany Wise won the 400 in a time of 56.96. With a time of 61.75, Danielle Myricks won the 400-meter hurdles. Elizabeth Wilson took the other individual title for the Bears, clocking a 25.04 to win the 200-meter dash. The women's 1,600 relay also took the top place, recording a time of 3:48.53.

After opening the outdoor season at home, the Bears return to the road next weekend, traveling to Houston for the Tom Tellez Invitational on March 29.
