Distance Runners Open Drake Relays

Brad Miles

April 24, 2014

A quartet of Baylor track and field distance runners kicked off the Bears' participation in the 2014 Drake Relays by competing on Thursday at Drake Stadium.

To open the night, junior Matt Galvin took part in the first 10,000-meter race of his collegiate career. He finished 12th among 33 runners in a time of 30:17.53. His time is seventh-best in school history with only a pair of BU runners, Matt Chance and Bill Adams, having run faster times.

As a member of the Baylor cross country team, Galvin has run off-the-track 10K races, but Thursday was his first on-the-track 10,000-meter event.

At the 5,000-meter distance, senior Brad Miles set a personal-best time of 14:55.11 to take 12th. In his first 5K of the season, Miles improved upon his PR time of 14:57.00 by almost two seconds.

On the women's side, Erin Hegarty was 11th in the 5,000 meters in a season-best mark of 16:44.60. She bettered her previous best of 2014 by over 23 seconds, after running a 17.18.49 just last week at the Michael Johnson Classic.

Alex Davis took 23rd in the 5,000-meter event with a time of 17:31.17.

"It was a really solid race for Matt. He did great and took advantage of a great night. The wind and rain died down and Matt got in a groove. He was rolling and then faded a little in the last 2K, but it was a solid first 10K for him. He has done a lot of hard work and it is paying off." - assistant coach Jon Capron on Matt Galvin's performance

"Brad had to go out a little faster than we wanted him to. There were supposed to be 25 people in his race, but by the time they started it there were only 14 and they were the 14 fast ones. They all went out pretty quick and Brad held on, but then faded coming home. He is strong, but wasn't quite ready to go out like that." - Capron on Brad Miles

"Erin ran solid. She had a great night. She can be even faster when regionals rolls around, but tonight was a step in the right direction for her." -Capron on Erin Hegarty

Baylor will be back in action at the Drake Relays on Friday. BU's day will begin with the hurdlers running at 9:30 a.m., followed by the field events at 10 a.m.
