Baylor senior April Holliness (Duncanville, Texas) fell just short of her second straight regional title with a mark of 6.41 meters (21-0 ½) to finish second, while senior Lakadron Ivery (Tyler, Texas) finished third with a mark of 6.30 meters (20-8) in the long jump at the NCAA Midwest Regional Track & Field Championships hosted by Oklahoma Friday at John Jacobs Track & Field Complex.
Holliness won the championship last year in College Station, Texas, with a school record jump of 21-10 ¼. Texas' Marshavet Hooker, the Big 12 champion, finished first with a jump of 21-2 ½. Holliness and Ivery move on to the NCAA Championships by virtue of their top-five finishes.
Junior Chris Gillis (Pennsauken, N.J.) also qualified for the NCAA Championships by finishing fourth in the long jump with a mark of 7.51 meters (24-7 ¾).
In the Bears only final of a running event, sophomore Brittany Brockman (Houston, Texas) finished ninth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:02.62. The race was a tuneup for Brockman, who has already automatically qualified for the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Championships.
The Bears had three women qualify for the final in the 100 meters and 200 meters. Ivery had the third-fastest time of 11.48, senior Elizabeth Wilson (Duncanville, Texas) had the seventh-fastest time of 11.72 and freshman Carla Grace (San Antonio, Texas) grabbed the final qualifying spot in the 100 meters at 11.78. The trio also qualified for the finals in the 200 meters with Ivery and Grace winning their heats. Ivery ran the second-fastest time at 23.50, Grace ran the third-fastest at 23.71 and Wilson came in at 23.85.
Ivery also anchored the 4x100-meter relay to a season-best time of 44.02. Junior
Marquisha Sefas (Ft. Worth, Texas) led off, followed by junior
Angel Perkins (Cerritos, Calif.), Wilson and Ivery.
Senior Darold Williamson (San Antonio, Texas) coasted to the fastest qualifying time in the 400 meters with a time of 45.62. Sophomore Kevin Mutai (Round Rock, Texas) qualified fifth at 46.80, while sophomore Mark Teter (San Antonio, Texas) did not qualify, finishing 14th at 47.28.
Junior Wil Fitts (Desoto, Texas) qualified for the finals in the 800 meters with a time of 1:48.46.
Junior Jerome Miller (Houston, Texas) qualified for the finals in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.00 and also qualified in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.26. Senior Brian McDonald (Houston, Texas) finished 21st with a time of 53.47.
Perkins finished 13th at 54.36, while sophomore Rena Napoleon (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished 18th at 54.91 in the 400 meters. Junior Janelle Mulkey (San Antonio, Texas) finished 15th in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 14.03. Senior Danielle Myricks (Willingboro, N.J.) finished 13th with a time of 1:00.26 in the 400-meter hurdles.
The championships conclude with the finals Saturday beginning with the field events at noon. Freshman Brittany Devereaux (Denton, Texas) will start the action for the Bears with the discus at noon. The top-five finishers in each event move on to the NCAA Championships June 8-11 at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.
