WACO, Texas - Baylor's track and field team completed a tough day of qualifying at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.

Both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays turned in fast times, but neither was good enough to make it through qualifying. For the men, it will be the first NCAA Outdoor Championship that won't include the Bears since 1979.

"It was a really tough day, there was some incredible competition out there," head coach Todd Harbour said. "I was proud of the effort of our athletes today, but the outcome was just a little bit short of what we needed to make the finals."

The squad of Justin Allen, James Gilreath, Drew Seale and Zwede Hewitt were just a quarter of a second from their season-best with a time of 3:03.69, but took ninth overall to miss the finals by one spot and sixth-tenths of a second. The splits on the men's side started with a 46.72 from Allen, followed by Gilreath's 45.40 and Seale's 45.86, before finishing with a 45.49 from Hewitt.

On the women's side, Diamond Richardson, Alyssa Nichols, Brittany OgunMokun and Raena Rhone turned in a season-best time of 3:32.34 to finish fifth in their heat and 13th overall. Richardson opened the race with a 52.94 leg, while Rhone closed with a 52.79. On the middle two legs, Nichols ran a 53.29 in the second spot and OgunMokun set up Rhone with a 53.01.

In the men's 200 meters, junior Everett Walker missed a qualifying berth, taking 14th overall with his time of 20.79. Walker will be part of the men's 4x100-meter relay that will compete in the finals on Saturday morning, along with Whitney Prevost, Woodrow Randall and Blake Heriot.

Baylor will be back in action at Drake Stadium for the third day of competition in the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday. Junior Skylar White will be the only Baylor competitor on the day, competing in the shot put at 5 p.m.
