COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Baylor’s track and field team travels to the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, Texas.
While a partial squad of Bears hit the track in early December for a season warm-up meet, Baylor will be at full capacity this weekend. The Bears return 15 All-Americans, 11 school record holders, and 100 years of coaching experience for the 2010 season.
Baylor’s men begin the season ranked No. 11, while the women are ranked 16th by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
For the men, two-time national champion and six-time All-American Trey Harts leads the way, while 10-time All-American Tiffany Townsend paces the women’s squad. Six All-Americans return on the men’s side, including Harts, Courtney Thomas, J.T. Scheuerman, Chris Gowell, Marcus Boyd, and Zwede Hewitt. On the other side, the women return nine All-Americans with Townsend, Nichole Jones, Erin Bedell, Diamond Richardson, DeAna Carson, Danielle Bradley, Brittany Carr, Tiana Hood, and Brittany Bruce.
Last season, the Baylor men finished fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships, while the women were 10th overall. Harts took the 200-meter national title, then helped the 4x400-meter relay squad to its fifth national title in a row. The victory in the 4x400-meter relay helped continue a string that eventually reached 42 consecutive wins in that event.
The Texas A&M Invitational is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with the evening session on the track slated for 5 p.m. No. 1 ranked Texas A&M is one of four teams ranked in the top 25 on the women side. No. 15 Texas, No. 16 Baylor, and No. 21 Oklahoma will all compete. For the men, No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 6 Oklahoma, and No. 11 Baylor are all in the field.
