INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Baylor freshman Brittany Brockman (Houston, Texas) ran a time of 21:37 on the 6K course to finish sixth at the USA Junior Cross Country Championships on Saturday. Brockman grabbed the final spot on Team USA and will now compete at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium on Saturday, March 20.
Former Bear Debbie Thornhill, who finished her eligibility in 2003 and was a two-time Big 12 champion in the 10,000 meters, ran 28:44 in the women's open 8K to finish 13th. The course was covered in 1-2 inches of snow and snow continued to fall throughout the meet.
"I was extremely pleased with the way both Brittany and Debbie ran today," head cross country coach Todd Harbour said. "You really had to be tough today. With the conditions the way they were, you couldn't see a speck of grass anywhere on the course, every inch was covered with snow."
Brockman, who finished 1:59 behind the top runner, Alison Costello (19:38), is the first Baylor runner to ever qualify for the World Cross Country Championships.
