WACO, Texas - Following a successful indoor season, the Baylor track and field team will open the 2014 outdoor season with a multitude of athletes competing at the TCU Invitational on Thursday and Friday in Fort Worth, Texas.
"We are very, very excited to get this season rolling," head coach Todd Harbour said. "Coming off indoor season, we have some good momentum and hopefully we can continue that on through a great outdoor season. A few of the ones that competed at indoor nationals won't open outdoor until next week, but we are taking a big group up."
BU is slated to 49 women's athletes and 30 men's athletes in action. The two-day meet also features Kansas State, North Texas, SMU, Texas State and UT Arlington along with host institution TCU.
The invitational meet will open on Thursday afternoon with the women's discus competition starting at noon with the men's discus to follow. The men's hammer throw event begins at 3 p.m., followed by the women's section. On Friday, the field events will begin at 9:30 a.m., while running events start up at 1 p.m. at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex.
The switch to outdoor competition will include a variety of different events from the indoor season. The field events will include the discus, javelin and hammer throw, while on the track the 4x100-meter relay, 100/110-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles will all be contested for the first time.
The Bears are coming off having three athletes garner All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships last week. Baylor's Felix Obi was the NCAA triple jump champion, while Tiffani McReynolds was second in the 60-meter hurdles and Rachel Johnson was eighth in the 3,000 meters.
In 2013, Baylor completed the outdoor season with seven All-Americans. From that group, four will return in 2014. Sprinters Blake Heriot, Isaiah Duke and Drew Seale will look to lead the BU 4x400-relay crew back into the NCAA top eight, while Desmine Hilliard will try to repeat as an All-American in the discus. BU will also have 2012 All-American Everett Walker back, after he did not compete in the indoor season because his eligibility was exhausted in that season. At the 2013 Big 12 meet, the women finished second and the men were seventh as 26 competitors tallied 41 All-Big 12 honors.
Last season at the TCU Invitational, Baylor athletes won nine event titles.
After competing at TCU, Baylor will head south to Austin for the Texas Relays, which start Wednesday. Select student-athletes will also travel to the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas, which begins on March 27.
