Baylor Fares Well in Texas Relays Morning Session

AUSTIN, Texas - Baylor's quartet of Tiffany Wise, Chava Demart, Keisa Brown and Barbara Petrahn advanced to Saturday's finals in the 4x400-meter relay here Friday with a time of three minutes, 38.44 seconds in the preliminary round at the Texas Relays. Also advancing to Saturday's finals was the women's 4x100 relay team and Michael Smith in the 110-meter hurdles.

Baylor finished third overall in the preliminaries of the 4x400 behind only Texas (3:33.92) and Texas-El Paso (3:37.82). In the 4x100, Ssereta Lafayette, Tamara Johnson, Brown and Petrahn combined for a 45.82 to advance as the ninth and final team. Louisiana State had the fastest preliminary time at 44.41 seconds.

Meanwhile, Smith turned in a time of wind-aided time of 14.03 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, advancing to the finals as the eighth participant. Martin Dossett finished tied for 14th overall in the preliminary round with a time of 14.18 seconds.

Cynthia Benson matched her best clearance of the year in the women's high jump. The junior cleared 1.73 meters (5-8) to finish fifth. Lafayette barely missed advancing in the women's 100 meters, she clocked a 11.56 mark, which was tied for 11th overall.

Competition will continue here Friday night. Baylor will be in action in the sprint medley relay for both men and women, the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, the men's distance medley relay and the women's 5,000 meters.
