IRVING, Texas - After a two-win weekend at the Michael Johnson Classic, Baylor thrower Skylar White was named the Big 12 Female Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, conference officials announced on Wednesday.
White won both the shot put and discus competitions on Saturday at Baylor's second home meet of the year. In the shot put, she recorded a heave of 53-6.25 [16.31m] to win her third shot put competition this outdoor season.
In the discus event, White tallied a mark of 172-4 to [52.52m], which outpaced the rest of the field by over six feet. The senior has now won the discus throw at four different meet this outdoor season.
This is the third time this outdoor season that the DeSoto, Texas, native, has won both events at a single meet. With her season-best throws, White ranks 12th in the shot put (55-2) and sixth in the discus (181-0) nationally.
The Big 12 honor is the third of White's career. She last received the honor on April 18, 2012 and had previously won it on Jan. 18, 2011.
Baylor has now won three awards from the Big 12 this season. Felix Obi (outdoors) and Tiffani McReynolds (indoor) were both honored earlier this year. This is the first time that Baylor has had both a men's and women's athlete honored in the outdoor season since 2009.
Since 2001, five different Baylor women have won seven weekly awards. White joins McReynolds as the only two BU female athletes to be honored with an outdoor award twice in a career.
Baylor is off from competition this week, but will host the 2013 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex, May 3-5.
