IRVING, Texas - Baylor's track and field teams combined to land a school-record 41 total members on the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 Team, league officials announced on Tuesday.
Baylor featured a total of 25 women with 23 on earning first-team honors and two earning second-team honors, as well as 16 men with 13 first-teamers and three second-teamers. BU's total of 41 honorees shattered the previous program record of 22, while setting a new mark for the second consecutive year and fifth time in the last six seasons.
The list included 13 return honorees, with fifth-year seniors James Gilreath and Leigh Ann Ganzar earning the award for the fourth time. Philip Raaf, Diamond Richardson, Kristen Hanselka and Jessica Ubanyionwu were each named to the first team for the third time, while Ben Allen, Kyle Cash, Drew Seale, Jessica Gabler and Lizzy Whitney earned first-team honors for the second. Ben Haby and Robbie Knorr were each named to the second team for the second time in their careers.
First-time honorees named to the women's first team included Jasmine Adekoya, Alyssa Nichols, Lindsay Warner, Sam Allen, Michelle Nwachukwu, Lauren Rover, Cate Westenhover, Justine Charbonnet, Christina Holland, Brittany OgunMokun, Jessica Shadley, Leah Frazier, Mariah Kelly, Sam Patty, Taylor Torres, Tiffani McReynolds and A'mie Preston. Natalia Liz and Ivorie Walker were each named to the second team.
The entire Big 12 Conference named 272 student-athletes to the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field Team. Among those honored, 18 were nominated with a 4.00 grade point average.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, the track and field academic all-league squad consisted of 226 first-team members combined with 46 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative over the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
