2006 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships Central

The Baylor track & field team hosts the 2006 Big 12 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday through Sunday, May 12-14, at Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex.

Several Bears rank among the top five in the conference in their respective events and will be looking to claim an outdoor title.

Junior Reggie Witherspoon, the Big 12 Indoor champion in both the 200 and 400 meters as well as the High Point Performer and Big 12 Indoor Male Athlete of the Year, ranks third in the Big 12 in the 400 meters and runs on both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays. Senior Wil Fitts ranks third in the 800 meters, senior Jerome Miller ranks third in the 110-meter hurdles and senior Chris Gillis ranks third in the long jump. The women boast a strong sprinting corps with seniors Angel Perkins and Marquisha Sefas, junior Kandace Tucker and sophomore Carla Grace. The group holds down four of the top six spots in the 200 meters, three of the top eight spots in the 100 meters and Perkins has the second-fastest time in the 400 meters.

Freshman Erin Bedell has the fastest time in the Big 12 in the 1,500 meters and the fifth-best in the 800 meters, while her sister, sophomore Lyndsy Bedell ranks third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Junior Ruth Waller ranks third in the 1,500 meters, junior Monique Ortega ranks fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and sophomore Brittany Devereaux ranks fifth in the discus. Senior Shanta Bibbs and junior Lauren Tillman ranks fourth and fifth, respectively, in the conference in the 400-meter hurdles. Both the women's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays rank second.

Baylor has 13 women in 19 events qualified for regional competition as well as the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays. There are 10 men in 12 events regionally qualified and the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays. The NCAA Midwest Regional will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The NCAA Championships return to Sacramento, Calif., for the second straight year June 8-11.
