WACO, Texas - Baylor senior Brandon Couts was named Big 12 Conference Track and Field Co-Male Athlete of the Week Monday by the conference office. A nine-time all-American, Couts shares this week's honor with Christian Cantwell of Missouri, Colorado distance runner Kara Grgas-Wheeler earned the weekly award on the women's side.
Couts, the owner of a Big 12 record 14-career conference titles, reached NCAA provisional qualifying standards in the 200 meters last Thursday at the Texas A&M All-Comers Meet with a time of 20.58 seconds. That time is tied for the 13th-fastest this season in the NCAA and makes Couts the fifth-fastest 400-meter male athlete in school history.
The defending Big 12 outdoor champion in the 200 meters, Couts now has the fastest times in the conference this season in both the 200 and the 400. He has reached NCAA provisional qualification standards in both events, ranking 15th in the 400.
Couts joins Bayano Kamani and Floyd Thompson as Baylor winners of the male athlete of the week award during the outdoor season. Barbara Petrahn and Lanie Millar have both been so honored on the women's side, meaning Baylor has won at least one of the two awards in each of the last seven weeks.
Baylor will return to action this weekend for the 2001 Big 12 Outdoor Championships, hosted by Texas A&M at the Frank G. Anderson Track and Field Complex in College Station, Texas.
