- Senior Jessica Ubanyionwu
earned Academic All-District 7 honors, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.
The award, which recognizes the top student-athletes for their combined performance both academically and athletically, is the second in Ubanyionwu's career. The El Paso, Texas, native was named to this year's second team with her 3.93 grade-point average in health science studies/pre-medicine.
On the track, Ubanyionwu has added to her lengthy list of accomplishment's this season. Indoors, she earned All-America and all-Big 12 honors in the triple jump, placing fifth at the national championship after earning a runner-up finish at the Big 12 meet. Outdoors, Ubanyionwu earned another runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championship and then placed sixth last weekend at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds to earn a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Student-athletes are nominated by the institution's sports information director and must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA at his/her current institution. Student-athlete's must have completed at least one year at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions.
