WACO, Texas - The Baylor track and field team opens the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships with 20 student-athletes competing in 17 events over the course of the four-day event, Wednesday through Saturday, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

"For us, we've got a great group going, and we're excited about the opportunity," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We're always trying to aspire to be a podium team. Top 10 is within our reach. We definitely have opportunities on both sides to get the job done."


Baylor will have a school-record 18 entries made up of 20 student-athletes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. The women have 10 entries with eight individuals and two relays, while the men have eight total (6 individuals, 2 relays).


Baylor is currently ranked No. 12 in the NCAA on the women's side and No. 15 on the men's side. The BU women are one of five Big 12 teams in the top 25, while the BU men are one of the league's four in the top 25.


Baylor senior Everett Walker and sophomore Ashley Fields both qualified in three events at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. Walker will be in the 100 and 200 meters and on the 4x1 relay team, while Fields will run the 200 meters and on both relays.


Baylor also has six other athletes, who will compete in two events, including Trayvon Bromell (100, 4x100), Blake Heriot (4x100, 4x400), TJ Holmes (400 Hurdles, 4x400), Tiffani McReynolds (100, 100 Hurdles), Alyssa Nichols (4x100, 4x400) and Raena Rhone (400, 4x400), .


Four members of Baylor's contingent are school record holders, including Erin Atkinson in the hammer throw (213-2), Trayvon Bromell in the 100-meters (10.01), Rachel Johnson in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:49.31) and Tiffani McReynolds in the 100-hurdles (12.59).


The Bears have all four of their relay teams qualified for the NCAA Championships for a second straight year. BU's men's 4x1 team has qualified for nationals for five straight years, while the men's 4x4-crew has been to every NCAA Championships since 1980.


Baylor's women placed second and the men were fourth at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Lubbock. It tied for the highest team finish ever by the women and was the men's best since 2001.


Baylor's group of 20 student-athletes includes three former outdoor All-Americans Blake Heriot (2012, 4x100 & 2013, 4x400), Drew Seale (2011, 4x400 & 2013, 4x400) and Everett Walker (2012, 4x100).


Throughout the season, Baylor has been led by its hurdle crews. Besides McReynolds and Holmes, Baylor will have Bryce Grace in action (110 hurdles).
