WACO, Texas - The Baylor track and field team is slated to have four athletes in action at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships, which start Friday and continue through Sunday, at Hayes Track at the Haugh Complex in Bloomington, Ind.
All four participants are coming off their freshman collegiate seasons in Waco. On the women's side, Demitra Carter will run in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes while Sarah Yocum will compete in the 100 and 400-meter hurdles. On the men's side, Jayson Baldridge will take part in the 400-meter hurdles while Howard Fields III will run the 400 meters.
2018 Baylor track & field signees KC Lightfoot (pole vault), Jake Merrell (800m, 1,500m) and Alyssa Miller (heptathlon/high jump) will also compete at the national meet.
The meet features the future of USA Track & Field as the best athletes under the age of 20, including high school standouts and the nation's most promising college freshmen, look to qualify for the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, July 10-15.
Coming into the meet, Carter owns the 11th (11.72) and 14th-fastest (23.94) qualifying marks in the 100 and 200-meter events, respectively. She competed in seven outdoor meets during her first season in Waco, running her qualifying times at the Big 12 Championship in Waco.
The first round of the 100 meters will be at 2:15 p.m. CT Friday with the final slated for later that night at 5:40 p.m. The first round of the 200 meters will be contested at 5:40 p.m. on Saturday with the event final running at 3:15 p.m. Sunday.
Yocum boasts the 11th-best (59.67) qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles. She ran her personal best at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship and posted a ninth-place finish in the finals. As a freshman, she advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary Championships in the event.
The 100-meter hurdles will go off at 3:45 p.m. CT in the first round Saturday followed by the final at 6:50 p.m. that same day. Yocum will run in the first round of the 400-meter hurdles at 4:40 p.m. CT on Friday, followed by the event final at 5:10 p.m. Saturday.
Baldridge comes into the meet with the fourth-fastest 400m hurdle time of 50.29. Before battling a late season injury, he ran his season best at the National Relays Championship which qualified him for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships. He qualified for the event final before pulling up due to his injury. The 400-meter hurdles first round will go off at 4:40 p.m. CT on Friday, followed by the event final at 5:10 p.m. on Saturday.
Fields, the team's only male Freshman All-American, enters the field with the top qualifying time of 45.66 in the 400 meters. His season-best time placed third at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship on May 13, qualifying him for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships. He also ran second leg on the men's 4x400-meter relay that placed seventh in last week's final at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Field's first round is slated for 4:35 p.m. CT Saturday with the final running at 2:25 p.m. on Sunday.
