Aug. 19, 2009

BERLIN, Germany - Former Baylor track star and two-time defending world champion Jeremy Wariner earned a spot in the 400-meter finals at the IAAF Track and Field World Championships in Berlin, Germany.

Wariner, a four-time NCAA champion and three-time Olympic gold medalist, looked in control of his semi-final heat of the 400 meters at the World Championships. He made up the stagger in the first 200 meters, then held a comfortable lead down the homestretch. Wariner coasted across the finish line with a time of 44.69 seconds to automatically qualify for the finals.

Wariner, and fellow United States competitor LaShawn Merritt, will each compete in the eight-man final scheduled for Friday, Aug. 20, at 2:20 p.m. CDT.
