Baylor senior Karin Ernstrom outran her nearest
competition by 15 seconds to win
the 1999 Penn State Open National Invitational,
held Saturday in University
Park, Pa.
Ernstrom's time of 17:22.64 led the Bears,
as the women placed third out of
nine teams, behind No. 11 North Carolina State and
No. 21 William and Mary.
Freshman Sarah Broyles also finished in the top
10, placing sixth with a time of
17:43.20.
Stephanie Bennett, another freshman,
finished 18th as she completed the 5000m
course in 18:10.23. Sophomore Kara Newton came in
just behind Bennett, placing
20th with a time of 18:13.26. Freshman Erin Dixon
rounded out Baylorıs top five
in 28th place (18:24.38).
Also running for the womenıs team were
Cynthia Henges (43rd, 18:59.33) and Leah
Marbach (50th, 19:22.91).
The Baylor menıs team placed seventh, led
by senior Brandon Buhr, who came in
ninth. Buhr finished the 5.2 mile run in a time
of 26:11.57 to pace the Bears.
Second on the Bears was freshman Ferenc
Beskesi, who continued to run well,
placing 18th in a time of 26:43.67.
Sophomores Jon Capron (37th, 27:27.44),
Aaron Ward (46th, 28:06.33) and Corey
Dunigan (48th, 28:26.51) rounded out the top five
for Baylor.
Freshman Alex Adler placed 55th with a
time of 29:29.92, and senior Brett Lamb
came in 56th in a time of 29:59.94.
The cross country teams have two weeks off
before traveling down to San Marcos
for the Southwest Texas State meet on October 22.
