WACO, Texas -
After an hour delay due to inclement weather, the Baylor women's cross country team raced to a team title at the Baylor Twilight Invitational. The Baylor men's team placed fourth in the event.
Nichole Jones (Spring, Texas) led the way for Baylor with her third career individual title with a time of 13:37.9, edging Renee Graham of Lamar by more than three seconds over the four kilometer course. Last year as a freshman, Jones took first at the Bear Relays and the North Texas Invitational to open the season.
"It was good to get the season started even though we had to wait out some rain," said head coach Todd Harbour. "Nichole Jones has been running really well, continuing her great track seasons, and we had a lot of high finishes with seven of the top 10 runners."
Lauren Hagans (Little Rock, Ark.) placed third and Danielle Bradley (West Palm Beach, Fla.) finished fourth. Lyndsy Bedell (Plano, Texas) finished sixth, while Kristen McGlynn (Bailey, Colo.), Jessi Barnes (Bentonville, Ark.), Renae Van Wyhe (Collierville, Tenn.) and Erin Bedell (Plano, Texas) placed eighth through 11th.
The women took first place with 21 points, while Texas A&M finished second with 69 points and Lamar took third with 77 points.
Jacob Jones (Willis, Texas) was the top finisher for Baylor on the men's side, placing 10th with a time of 18:55.3 over the 6K course. Freshman Robbie Knorr (Livermore, Calif.) placed 15th in 19:05.5, while John Wenhold (Corpus Christi, Texas) took 20th with a time of 19:15.3.
"I'm really proud of our guys, and thought Jacob ran a good race to finish in the top 10," said Harbour. "We knew that our guys were going to have a tough time with a good field, but it is good to get them a race, and get some experience for the younger guys."
Francis Kasagule of Lamar won the individual title with a time of 17:59.9 leading Lamar to the team title with 43 points. Texas (57) placed second, Texas A&M (62) took third and Baylor placed fourth with 99 points.
The Baylor women are back in action next weekend as the Lady Bears travel to run in the BYU Autumn Classic. The men's and women's teams will compete at the UNT Invitational on September 15.
