Sept. 3, 2001

WACO, Texas - Matt Chance and Katherine Duncan each posted first-place finishes here Friday night to lead the Bear team to the title at the Baylor cross country trail. Male athletes ran four miles, while female athletes ran three miles. The event was held after inclement weather in the Houston, Texas, area made it impossible for Baylor to participate in the Rice Relays.

The Bear team tallied 34 points, bettering the Green team's 41 and the Gold team's 48. Members of the Bear team were Chance, Sam Bernall, Jon Capron, Ryan Hendricks, Jessa Vacek, Stephanie Bennett, Duncan, Katie O'Connell and Ana Kaczmarek.

Chance ran a time of 19:36 for the individual title on the men's side. Nick Devenport (19:58), Ferenc Bekesi (20:10) and Aaron Ward (20:22) placed second through fourth, respectively.

On the women's side, Bennett paced the field with a 17:42 clocking. Leah Marbach ran second at 17:56, followed by Vacek and Bennett both at 18:11.

Baylor will return to action Sept. 8 at the UTA Invitational in Arlington, Texas. Racing will get underway at 8 a.m. with the women running two miles and the men running four miles.
