WACO, Texas
– Freshman Brad Miles led the Baylor men’s cross country team to the title at the UTA Season Opener on Saturday morning in Arlington, Texas. The BU women finished fourth overall as a team in the meet, which Baylor added to the schedule on Friday after inclement weather and flooding cancelled the Texas A&M Invitational.

“We did a great job on both sides,” head coach Todd Harbour said. “The men looked really good, and we got some work done to get ready for the next big meet. We really appreciate UTA for letting us come up and compete with such late notice.”

Running without three of its top finishers from last week, the Baylor men placed all five of its top runners at UTA in the top 10 to claim a team win by 31 points. The Bears scored 31 points as a team, finishing ahead of TCU’s 62 and UTA’s 68.

In only his second collegiate meet, Miles covered the course in 20 minutes, 51.33 seconds, to place third overall for Baylor. Gavyn Nero led a group of three BU runners in a row with a fifth-place time of 21:06.72. Ben Haby was next at 21:08.96 and Brandon White was seventh overall at 21:10.85. Zac Flowers rounded out the men’s top-five with a 10th-place finish and a time of 21:19.56.

On the women’s side, none of the top five runners competed, but Baylor made a strong showing with its fourth-place finish. TCU took the women’s title with 32 points, while the Lady Bears scored 111 points.

Senior Lauren Simpson and freshman Robyn Bennett were the top two finishers for the Lady Bears. Simpson was 15th overall at 11:51.29, while Bennett was 16th with a time of 11:56.45. Sophomore Lindsay Warner was three spots back in 19th at 11:58.98. A group of three newcomers to the Baylor women’s team finished next with Ruby Tellez, Samantha Allen and Kelsey Wallour crossing the line in succession. Tellez placed 25th at 12:25.76, while Allen was 26th at 12:26.26 and Wallour was 27th at 12:37.57.

The BU cross country teams will have a one-weekend break before the 25th Annual Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 25 in Minneapolis, Minn. One of the biggest cross country meets in the nation, the Griak will begin at 12:20 p.m. for Baylor.
