TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Baylor women's cross country team finished 31st, while the men took 49th at the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday.
In their final races before the Big 12 Championships, the teams ran at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course that will also host next month's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.
With an 809-point team score, the women's team carded its 31st-place finish. Rachel Johnson was the top BU finisher by running the six-kilometer course in 21:08.12 and taking 59th. Two freshmen followed Johnson with Maggie Montoya (21:33.64) in 113th and Alex Davis (21:52.85) in 166th. Erin Hegarty was BU's fourth runner in a time of 22:07.20 to be 206th. The final Baylor scoring runner was Peyton Thomas, who took 266th in a time of 22:32.87.
The men, running on an eight-kilometer course, were led by senior Brad Miles, who was 198th overall in a time of 25:10.27. Matthew Cochran (25:15.23) and Jonathan Tijerina (25:24.23) were the next two Bears to cross the finish line in 213th and 245th place, respectively. Kyle Scanlan was 261st overall in a time of 25:35.11, while JR Hardy was the final scoring Bear, running a time of 25:44.01 to take 280th. That group combined to total 1197 points for the 49th-place team finish.
The men and women each had seven competitors in the event.
Overall there were 340 girls from 49 teams and 359 men competing from 52 teams.
Three of Baylor's top-5 women's finishers were freshmen.
