Runners Perform Well at Big 12 Championships

WACO, Texas - Baylor's cross country teams enjoyed considerable success at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships held at the Barton Creek Lakeside Golf Course in Spicewood, Texas on Friday, Oct. 31. The women's team posted a best-ever Big 12 finish in second place while the men's team crossed the finish line in fifth. Colorado's women posted their eighth championship out of a possible nine titles with 45 points while Colorado's men continued their dominance to win for the ninth straight time.

In addition, a record number five Baylor runners were named All-Big 12. Sophomore Angela Marvin, freshman Brittany Brockman and sophomore Lisa Cornelius were named to the women's squad while Matt Chance and Bo Price became Baylor's first male runners to be named All-Big 12.

Baylor's women's team posted their lowest-ever score in a Big 12 Championships meet with 76 points, besting the 113 they registered in 1997 when the team finished fifth. Angela Marvin (Kingwood, Texas) led the women's team over the 6,000-meter course with a time of 21:50.0 which placed her sixth. Brittany Brockman (Houston) ran a 22:01.7 good for eighth place and Lisa Cornelius (Little Elm, Texas) finished 15th with a time of 22:19.2. Monique Ortega, a freshman from El Paso, and Erin Dixon, a senior from Kingwood, completed Baylor's scoring with 22nd and 25th place finishes, respectively. Ortega completed the course in 22:38.3 while Dixon was clocked in 22:45.2. Also competing for the Bears but not figuring into the scoring were junior Jessa Chance (40th, 23:25.0), freshman Brittany McGuire (65th, 24:17.0) and junior April Hurst (74th, 25:21.5).

 

 

The men's team registered their second-lowest point total in a Big 12 Championship, finishing the 8,000-meter course with 141 points which place the team fifth. Senior Matt Chance registered his second top 10 finish in the conference meet by leading the Bears. The Colleyville, Texas native cruised to a ninth place finish, the highest-ever by a Baylor men's runner, covering the course in 25:00.5. Sophomore Bo Price (Atlanta, Texas) was 12th with a time of 25:97.6 and senior Kyle King (Sulphur Springs, Texas) covered the course in 25:33.1 which placed him 21st. Completing the scoring for the Bears were Rob Morrow (Grapevine, Texas) in 48th place with a time of 26:33.9 and Cody Wells (Crawford, Texas) at 26:37.5 which placed him 51st.
