XC Receives Academic Recognition From USTFCCCA

Feb. 9, 2017

NEW ORLEANS - The Baylor men's and women's cross country teams earned All-Academic honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, USTFCCCA officials announced Thursday.

This is the sixth-straight season in which BU has had both of its teams recognized.

The award honors teams which have succeeded both academically and athletically. To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.

Meanwhile, women’s runners Lindsey Bradley, Maggie Montoya, Peyton Thomas and Anna West, along with men’s runner Devin Meyrer garnered individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.

The Baylor men posted a 3.39 team cumulative GPA in 2016 and had six athletes make the Academic All-Big 12 team. In competition, the Bears were seventh at the Big 12 Championship and at the regional level BU had their best finish since 2010 by placing fifth.

On the women's side, the Lady Bears had a cumulative 3.44 GPA. BU had two selections to the league's academic squad. On the course, the women were fifth at the Big 12 Championship and second at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships to advance to the national meet where they placed 27th.

Individually, Bradley, Montoya, Thomas and West were four of 168 women's student-athletes to earn the academic accolade nationally, while Meyrer was one of 97 men. In order for a student-athlete to qualify for the honor, they must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and finished in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at regionals or as an All-American at the national meet.

Montoya, a senior health science studies major, earned the honor for a third-straight season. She was BU’s top runner throughout the year, earning All-Region honors at the NCAA South Central Regional in a season-best 6,000-meter time of 20:21.7 to be second. She also garnered All-Big 12 honors by taking sixth at the conference race.

Thomas, a senior environmental science major, tallied the second-consecutive All-Academic honor of her career. She also secured back-to-back All-Region honors by placing 13th at the NCAA South Central Regional.

Bradley, West and Meyrer each earned the recognition for the first time.

Bradley, a pre-business major, garnered All-Big 12 honors by placing fifth at the conference meet in 20:43.5 to be BU's top runner. She ran a season-best 6,000-meter time (20:24.6) to secure All-Region honors at NCAA South Central Regional honors with a third-place finish.

West, a nutrition sciences major, produced both All-Big 12 and All-Region honors. She had scoring performances in all seven fall meets. West placed 15th at the Big 12 Championship as BU's third runner with time of 21:14.2 to snag final All-Big 12 spot. She captured all-region accolade by placing ninth at the NCAA South Regional in 20:47.7.

Meyrer, a health and science studies major, earned All-Region honors with a 17th-place finish at NCAA South Central Regional meet. He completed the 10,000-meter course in 31:03.7 to secure the highest finish for a BU runner since 2006 and the first All-Region honor since 2013.
