WACO, Texas - Following a first-place finish at the Bear Twilight Invitational, Baylor cross country junior Rachel Johnson earned Big 12 Runner of the Week honors, the conference office announced Tuesday.
The Plano, Texas native tallied her third career Big 12 honor by opening season with a time of 13:33.2 and earning top honors for a second-straight year at the HOT Soccer Complex on Friday evening. The individual accomplishment propelled the BU women to the meet's team title and marked the second-consecutive season in which the Lady Bears have opened the year with a team victory.
Battling extreme heat, Johnson covered the four kilometer course 9.4 seconds faster than any other competitor and led for the majority of the race.
Last year, Johnson won Big 12 Runner of the Week accolades after taking the Bear Twilight title in a school-record time of 13:28.5. The following week Johnson claimed another league weekly honor following a win at the UTA Season Opener.
In the 17-year history of the Big 12, BU female runners have been honored 18 times.
Baylor will be off next weekend, before the women's team returns to action with select student-athletes traveling to the Iowa Invite on Sept. 13 and others competing at the UTA Season Opener on Sept. 14. The men's squad will not be back in action until Sept. 28 at the North Texas Invite.
