ARLINGTON, Texas - Baylor's men's and women's cross country teams will begin the 2001 season here Saturday, Sept. 8 at the UTA Season Opener. The Bears were slated to begin the season last weekend at the Rice Relays, also in Houston, but the meet was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Baylor will face tough competition from four other schools this weekend. Along with host Texas-Arlington, Texas Christian, Southern Methodist, and Oklahoma will also be in action.

The women will race first, starting their two-mile race at 8 a.m. The men will follow at 8:20 a.m. with a four-mile run.

Baylor will look to senior Kara Newton on the women's side and junior Ferenc Bekesi on the men's side to pace the Bear squads. Newton returns as the only Bear to have competed in the NCAA Championships a year ago, finishing 63rd overall, while Bekesi finished a team-best 11th at the South Central Regional in 2000.
