Cross Country Heads to Texas A&M Invitational

BAYLOR CROSS COUNTRY TRAVELS TO TEXAS A&M INVITATIONAL "We had a strong showing at the Bear Relays last weekend," head coach Todd Harbour said. "This will give us another opportunity to compete against quality teams as we see where we stand heading into some of the bigger meets of the year." At the Bear Relays, Baylor's team of Brittany Brockman and Lauren Hagans edged out the Bears' tandem of Lyndsy and Erin Bedell at the line to win the Bear Relays in a time of 28.20.3 in action at the Baylor Intramural Fields on Friday. The team of Brockman and Hagans narrowly edged out the Bedell sisters as the team won by less than a second as the Bedell sisters finished the 8,000-meter race in a time of 28:20.9. On the men's side, Baylor's Bo Price and Rob Morrow, who are redshirting this season and ran unattached, claimed the men's title, finishing the relay in a time of 37:09.8. With Price and Morrow redshirting the 2005 season, the Baylor men will be led this weekend by Jacob Jones and John Wenhold. The pair finished third at the Bear Relays last weekend after finishing the 12,000-meter race in a time of 38:03.04. Rey Hinojosa and freshman Hunter Garner will also play a key role on the men's side after the pair earned their first career top-10 finish at the Bear Relays, teaming to finish in eighth for Baylor with a time of 39:08.7. Following the meet, the Bears will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when Baylor travels to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational. Brittany Brockman CLAIMS ANOTHER RACE TITLE Brockman, a two-time all-region and all-conference selection, defended her 2004 title at the Bear Relays and also picked up a victory in the North Texas Opener. In addition to her first-place finishes, Brockman has picked up top-ten finishes in eight career races, including a third-place finish at last year's NCAA South Central Regional Cross Country Championships. Lauren Hagans WINS FIRST CAREER TITLE Hagans, a native of Little Rock, Ark., previously had a career-best finish of third at last year's Bear Relays. The sophomore also earned her third career top-ten finish as Hagans finished ninth at last season's North Texas Opener. BEDELL SISTERS MAKING THEIR MARK FOR THE BEARS Lyndsy Bedell found success in her first year as a Baylor runner and is looking for a strong showing throughout the 2005 season. As a freshman, Lyndsy was an all-region selection after finishing 23rd at the NCAA South Central Region Cross Country Championships last season in a career best time of 21:37 over the 6,000-meter course. In addition, Lyndsy claimed two top-ten finishes a year ago, placing third at the Bear Relays while finishing ninth at the North Texas Opener. Erin Bedell enters her freshman year as one of the most heralded cross country athletes to enter the Baylor cross country program. In high school, Bedell racked up and extensive list of athletic honors, including being named the Texas Girls' Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year her senior year. The freshman claimed the Texas state individual title in the 1,600-meters her junior and senior year and holds the state record in the event with a time of 4:43.58. This past summer, Bedell helped lead the Metroplex Striders to the national cross country championship and finished 28th at the IAAF Junior World Cross Country Championships in France. Bo Price AND Rob Morrow TO REDSHIRT DURING 2005 Price and Morrow have earned an extensive list of honors throughout their careers and the redshirt season should help make the men's team a force in the Big 12 Conference throughout the 2006 season. Price, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., is a two-time all-conference selection and earned all-conference and all-region selections a year ago. Morrow, who missed most of last season with an injury, will return in 2006 for his senior season. After scoring for Baylor in every meet as a sophomore in 2004, Morrow raced to two top-ten finishes in 2005 before being sidelined by an injury for the rest of the season. The native of Grapevine, Texas, is a three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll. MEN'S NEWCOMERS HAVE STRONG SHOWING AT RELAYS Wenhold, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, joins Baylor after lettering for four seasons at Mary Carroll High School and was named the high school's Cross Country Athlete of the Year his senior season. In addition to Wenhold several other newcomers had strong showings at the Bear Relays this past weekend. Freshman Hunter Garner teamed with Rey Hinojsa, a member of the Baylor track and field team last year and a newcomer on the cross country squad, finished seventh as freshmen Andrew Stroman teamed with Trey Slack to finish 13th. Jacob Jones RETURNS TO HELP LEAD BAYLOR MEN'S SQUAD Last season, Jones ran in four races for Baylor including appearances at the Roy Griak Invitational and the Big 12 Cross Country Championships. In 2004, Jones finished third at the Bear Relays and ran to an 11th-place finish at the Mean Green Opener. BAYLOR TO HOST BIG 12 CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS Colorado is the defending men's and women's team champion after sweeping the title last season. Last year, Baylor earned a fourth-place finish on the women's side while the men finished seventh. NEW CROSS COUNTRY COURSE TO MAKE ITS DEBUT The course features one of the most unique perspectives in the country for fans attending a race. From certain points along the course, fans viewing a race at Bear Run Cross Country Course can see the entire race without having to move throughout the course. BAYLOR TO HOST NCAA SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL Last season, the Baylor women finished third at the event and earned an at-large berth in the NCAA championships while the men raced to a seventh-place finish.
