NEW ORLEANS - Baylor's women's cross country team begin the season ranked first in the South Central Region, while the men are sixth in the initial regional rankings as announced by United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association officials.
The Baylor women, who finished second at the South Central regional meet and 19th at the NCAA Championships last season, started off the 2009 season with a dominating performance at the season-opening Bear Twilight Invitational. They combined to score just 16 points, with senior Nichole Jones taking the individual title, and Stephanie Morgan and Leigh Ann Ganzar placing second and third.
Baylor will also begin the season ranked 13th in the women's national preseason ranking. The Bears will be looking to reach their seventh consecutive NCAA Championship berth.
On the men's side, the Bears were ranked sixth in the USTFCCCA poll. Baylor finished 10th at the South Central regional meet last season, but started 2009 winning the Bear Twilight Invitational. Junior Robbie Knorr took the individual title, while Jeff Sadler placed second and Zac Flowers placed fourth.
After their second meet of the season, the Texas A&M Invitational scheduled for Sept. 12, was rained out, the Bears have added the Ken Garland Invitational at North Texas on Sept. 19 to their schedule.
