Bears to host Baylor Invitational - The Bears will host the sixth annual Baylor Invitational this Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Texas Farm Bureau. The first scheduled race is set to begin at 8:30 a.m., while the day's final event will start at 11:30 a.m. The university women will run a 5000-meter race at 9:30 a.m., and the university men will follow with a five-mile run at 10:05 a.m.

Teams from 14 different universities will comprise the field. In addition to host Baylor, teams slated to compete include Angelo State, Mary Hardin-Baylor, North Texas, Northwestern, Northwood, Southern Arkansas, Southern Methodist, Tarleton State, Texas-Arlington, Texas A&M, Texas Christian, Tulsa, and Wayland Baptist.

Also running in the meet Saturday will be 50 high schools teams divided into two divisions. Division I will be comprised of competitors from classes 4A and 5A, while Division II will include classes 3A, 2A, 1A, and private schools. Junior varsity and varsity girls will be running a 3200-meter race, while the boys will be competing in a 5000-meter run.

Well Rested - BU's cross country team is coming off a two-week break as last week's race at Rice University, scheduled for Sept. 15, was canceled due to the terrorist attacks in Washington D.C. and New York. The meet will not be rescheduled.

Last Time Out - Both the men's and women's teams had successful outings in the first meet of the season, bringing home first-place finishes from the UTA Season Opener on Sept. 8. For the men sophomore Matt Chance led the Bears placing second overall with a time of 20:14 in the four-mile race. BU junior Ferenc Bekesi also had an impressive performance finishing fifth overall (20:50). On the women's side senior Kara Newton paced the Baylor squad finishing second overall with a time of 11:40 in the two-mile race. Freshman Jessa Vacek was BU's next finisher turning in a time of 12:01 to place sixth. In all, the Lady Bears captured nine of the top-15 spots in the race.

Chance and Newton Sweep Big 12 Runner of the Week Honors - After both finishing second overall at the UTA Season Opener sophomore Matt Chance and senior Kara Newton were named the Big 12 Runners of the Week for the week of Sept. 11. Chance turned in a time of 20:14 to lead Baylor to a first-place finish, and Newton completed her race in 11:40 to pace the Lady Bears to victory.
