Women's Cross Country Moves up in Rankings

WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's cross country team moved up 13 spots in the latest cross country rankings, jumping from 27th to 14th in the FinishLynx/NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country National Poll.

The Lady Bears received 40 points in the first poll of the season (Sept. 22) but garnered 216 in the current poll after an impressive finish in the Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota last Saturday. Baylor's women's team made a huge statement on Saturday, finishing fifth place out of 26 teams, beating eight teams that were ranked ahead on them in the national poll.

In Minneapolis Baylor's top four women finished within 27 seconds of each other. Sophomore Lisa Cornelius (Little Elm) led Baylor runners finishing the 6K course in 21:30. Right on her heels was freshman Brittany Brockman (Houston/Langham Creek) with a time of 21:32. The duo finished in 22nd and 25th place, respectively. Angela Marvin (Kingwood), a sophomore, placed 31st with a time of 21:42 and senior Erin Dixon (Kingwood) finished in 51st place. Freshman Monique Ortega (El Paso/Montwood) was 71st, Jessa Chance (Southlake/Carroll) 110th and Megan McCoin (Houston/Tomball) was 130th.

In addition, the women's team is ranked No. 2 in the South Central Regional Cross Country poll, behind Arkansas. Baylor's men are No. 4 in the region.

Baylor will host the NCAA South Central Regional cross country competition on Saturday, Nov.15 at Waco's Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. The men's 10,000-meter race will be the first race of the day, followed by the women' 6,000-meter race.

The Bears' next action will be this Saturday (Oct. 4) when they participate in the Texas State Classic in San Marcos.
