WACO, Texas - Baylor's cross country teams will be in action at both the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Friday and the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday.
BU's top women's runners will get things started by taking part in the 58th-annual Notre Dame Invitational on Friday at 3:15 p.m. The meet will be run on a 5K course at Notre Dame's Burke Golf Course. Lady Bear runners at that meet include Alex Davis, Sarah Guhl, Erin Hegarty, Rachel Johnson, Mariah Kelly, Maggie Montoya, Erika Overbeck, Bree Schrader, Lindsey Smith and Peyton Thomas.
This year with their top runners in action the Baylor women have won the Bear Twilight Invitational and placed third at the Iowa Black & Gold Invite. Rachel Johnson has led BU by winning the individual title at both of those meets and then earning Big 12 Runner of the Week honors following each performance.
The Lady Bears will compete in the Blue race, which features 25 teams, including Air Force, Baylor, Bradley, BYU, Colorado State, Duke, Florida State, Illinois, Lamar, Lipscomb, Missouri, New Mexico, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ohio University, Princeton, Purdue, San Francisco, SMU, Southern Utah, UAB, UTEP, UTSA and Youngstown State.
On the men's side, the Bears will have a contingent of eight runners competing in the Chile Pepper Festival's 8K race at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday. BU runners for this weekend include Matthew Cochran, Derwin Graham, J.R. Hardy, Chris McElroy, Brad Miles, Kyle Scanlan, Jonathan Tijerina and Jordan West.
"We have been training for a little longer race and the guys have done a good job keeping their mileage up," assistant coach Jon Capron said. "We are looking forward to competing in a race that lends itself to more of our strengths right now. We have been training really hard and haven't gotten that fast yet, so it will be good to see how we measure up on a longer course."
Last time out the men's squad took second at the North Texas Invitational in Denton, Texas, on Saturday. Miles led the Bears by winning the four-mile race in a time of 20:16.64.
A secondary group of BU women will also compete in Arkansas on Saturday with a 5K race at 10:20 a.m. Kristina Brown, Courtney Cox, Jenna Henrich, Lauren Hierholzer, Lexi Reamer, Gretta Smith, Angela Tharpe and Kim Walbek will be in action for the Lady Bears. Many of those runners helped BU claim third-place finishes at the UTA Season Opener on Sept. 14 and the North Texas Invitational on Sept. 28.
After this weekend, the men and women will be off next weekend, before returning to competition on Oct. 19 at the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
