Women's Cross Country Takes Second at Big 12 Championships

Nov. 1, 2008

AMES, Iowa - The Baylor women's cross country team finished second overall at the 2008 Big 12 Cross Country Championships hosted by Iowa State. The men's squad took 10th place overall in the men's race.

The second-place finish ties the best finish for Baylor in Big 12 history. The Lady Bears also took second place at the 2003 Big 12 Championships. Texas Tech won the overall competition with 44 team points, while Baylor scored 71 points.

"You really have to take your hat off to Texas Tech," said head coach Todd Harbour. "They ran about as good of a race as you could run on a very difficult course.

The men's team finished 10th overall with 297 points, while Oklahoma State became the second-ever winner of the Big 12 with 26 points. The Colorado men had won the previous 12 team titles since the beginning of the Big 12 Conference.

Erin Bedell finished third overall with a time of 20:45.35, while Nichole Jones took 11th in 21:30.00. Both runners earned their second-career All-Big 12 honors, with Bedell claiming her first all-conference honor as a freshman in 2005, while Jones won hers as a freshman in 2006.

Bedell's third-place finish is the second-highest for a Baylor runner in Big 12 history, and the highest individual finish since Sherri Smith won the individual title in 1998.

"Erin ran really well," said Harbour. "She looked really good during the whole race. We got out really well, but lost a few spots at the end."

Danielle Bradley took 16th overall, just missing her first All-Big 12 honor. Katie Shaw took 20th in 21:53.85, while Renae Van Wyhe finished 21st with a time of 21:55.35.

"Katie Shaw had her best race of the season," said Harbour. "Her time was close to her PR [personal record] and she did a great job to be our fourth runner."

Robbie Knorr led the way for the Baylor men, finishing 45th overall in 25:46.28. Brandon White took 48th in 25:57.13, while Michael Williams finished 67th with a time of 26:49.73.

"Robbie had a great race for us," said Harbour. "He looked really strong through the whole race. Brandon did a super job as well."

Brandon Reed finished 68th overall, and Jeff Sadler, who had been Baylor's top finisher in each of the first four meets this season, took 69th overall.

"Brandon did a great job to make a move at the end and passed a lot of guys at the end of the race," said Harbour. "Jeff has been our top runner all year and we needed him to have a great race today to help us finish higher. He has struggled with an injury over the past few weeks, but he gutted through the race today."

Baylor returns to action on Nov. 15 as the Bears host the NCAA South Central Regional meet at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
