Baseball Blasts Houston 16-7

HOUSTON - The Baylor offense pounded out 14 hits and defeated Houston 16-7 Friday at the Astros College Classic, played at Enron Field. Baylor (1-1) received an offensive burst early in the game when catcher Kelly Shoppach hit a three-run homer to right field to give the 16th-ranked Bears a 3-0 lead. Shoppach went three-for-four on the day and had a career-high five RBI. The Bears' bats remained hot throughout the game, scoring three runs in the fourth when Mark Saccomanno connected for a three run home run down the left field line. Houston (0-1) wasn't able to get on the scoreboard until the fifth inning, at that point trailing 9-0. Baylor starter Derek Brehm pitched four innings giving up just one earned run, while striking out three. Kyle Edens (1-0) picked up the victory for Baylor in relief, pitching four innings, while giving up two runs on five hits and striking out three. Houston's starter Nick Torina (0-1) was roughed up for six hits and eight runs in his four innings of work. The first three batters (Chris Durbin, Trevor Mote and Mike Huggins) in the Bear lineup went a combined eight-for-15 with eight runs scored and four RBI. Justin Spooner pitched the ninth for the Bears, allowing two runs on three hits.
The Bears play their third and final game of the tournament Saturday morning at 11 a.m. against TCU (0-1).
