Box Score

HOUSTON, Texas - A four-run third inning and solid pitching propelled 10th-ranked Baylor past No. 19 Rice 6-1 Sunday in final-day action of the Minute Maid Park College Classic. The Bears (3-0) claim the classic title as the only team to go undefeated on the weekend. Rice falls to 3-1.

Baylor won the game despite being out-hit 13-9. Rice left 12 runners on base, including six in scoring position and the bases loaded after scoring its lone run in the sixth.

"This game was a lot like some of the games we've had with Rice in the past, but in reverse," Baylor head coach Steve Smith said. "We've had a few against them where we got a lot of hits but couldn't score. Today was just our day. Josh (Ford) got us going early, and (Cory) VanAllen was really focused today."

VanAllen (1-0) tallied eight strikeouts on the day, double his previous career high. He allowed one run, which scored after he exited the game with one out in the sixth, and scattered seven hits with no walks. Ryan LaMotta, Randall Linebaugh and Tyler Bullock combined for 3.2 shutout innings to close the game.

With one out in the third, Paul Witt beat out an infield hit to the hole at short. After a Reid Brees walk, Kyle Reynolds plated Witt with a single to center. Ford followed with a two-run double that one-hopped the wall in right-center. Michael Griffin closed out the scoring with an RBI single down the line in right.

Rice had at least one runner on base in every inning but could only scratch the scoreboard in the sixth. Three consecutive one-out singles, the last by Jordan Dodson, provided the Owls' only run of the game.

Baylor was quick to answer, scoring a run on a walk, a Rice error and a Chase Gerdes two-out single. The Bears tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. Witt led off the ining with a single and later scored on a two-out Griffin single.

The Bears chased Rice starter Matt Ueckert (0-1) from the game in the third. He allowed four runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

Witt and Griffin led the Bears in hits with two each. Griffin and Ford had two RBI each.

Baylor led all schools with five players on the all-classic team. Representing the Bears were Ford, Griffin, Pankratz, Zach Dillon and Trey Taylor.

Ford finished the weekend 6-for-12 with three runs, three RBI and three doubles. He hit .452 (14-for-31) with seven runs, 10 RBI, six doubles and a home run in three Minute Maid Park College Classics.

Baylor returns to action Tuesday night, hosting Texas-Arlington for the 2005 Baylor Ballpark opener. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CST.
