WACO, Texas - Baylor's 16th-ranked baseball team dropped its season opener to Oral Roberts, 7-3, on Friday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark. It was the first time Baylor has lost a non-conference home game since March 5 of last season, which was also the first game of a series against ORU.

"When a team puts seven runs on the board, gets 11 hits and does what they did tonight, you have got to give them credit, but you pitched poorly," Baylor head coach Steve Smith said. "You won't have that happen if you're pitching well."

Baylor starting pitcher Logan Verrett got into an early jam when ORU put runners on the corners with one out in the first, but he induced a groundball double play to get out of the inning unscathed.

Logan Vick drew a walk and Joey Hainsfurther reached on an infield single to put two on with one out for the Bears in the bottom half of the first, but Golden Eagles starting pitcher Bryce Smolen got consecutive flyouts to get out of the inning.

Verrett ran into trouble again in the third and this time Oral Roberts capitalized. ORU took advantage of four doubles and a walk to take an early 4-0 lead. Brandon King got the scoring started with a two-run double, and Nick Baligod drove in a run with a double and scored on a passed ball.

Baylor's Brooks Pinckard led off the bottom of the third with a single, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two outs later, Max Muncy hit a liner that deflected off the pitcher for an infield single, allowing Pinckard to score and cut the deficit to 4-1.

Verrett turned the ball over to Josh Turley to start the fourth inning, and he needed just eight pitchers to retire the side on three consecutive grounders. Turley again retired the side in order in the fifth, but he allowed three runs on three singles and two walks in the sixth.

Smolen didn't allow a Baylor baserunner past second base after Pinckard scored in the third. He picked up the win after allowing just one run on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

Verrett took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. It was Verrett's first loss in his last nine outings, dating back to April 17 at Kansas State.

Max Garner came on in relief of Turley with one out in the seventh, making his first appearance for the Bears since April 29, 2009. He allowed a single and got a groundball double play to end the seventh, then capped off a three-up, three-down eighth inning with a strikeout.

Baylor rallied in the bottom half of the eighth, when Hainsfurther drew a walk, Muncy delivered his second single of the game and Dan Evatt brought them both around to score with a double down the left-field line. Sean Johnson came out of the bullpen and issued a walk to Chris Slater, but he ended the rally by striking out the next three batters in order to keep ORU's lead at 7-3.

Crayton Bare worked a perfect ninth for the Bears, but Baylor was unable to mount anymore offense after Pinckard led off the bottom half of the inning with his second single of the day.

Muncy and Pinckard had two hits apiece for the Bears, while King, Baligod, Chris Elder and Jared Schlehuber each had two hits for ORU.

The loss snapped Baylor's 10-game winning streak in non-conference home games and brought the Bears' record to 22-5 in their last 27 games at Baylor Ballpark.

The series resumes at 2 p.m. Saturday at Baylor Ballpark. Senior RHP Jon Ringenberg is slated to take the mound for the Bears against junior RHP Joe Spring of Oral Roberts.
