THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball won its home opener 5-2 over UT Arlington on Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The win improved the Bears (2-2) to 15-5 in home openers under head coach Steve Smith.

Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Baylor tied the game in the second thanks in part to a Mavericks (0-4) error on a two-out pop up off the bat of Adam Toth that was dropped by second baseman Darien McLemore. Duncan Wendelimmediately made it hurt as he roped a double down the right field line on the next play to tie the game.

UTA answered in the fifth with a run after a one-out walk and RBI double by Derek Miller, giving the Mavericks another short-lived lead.

Baylor then took control of the game in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Darryn Sheppard singled with one out and Lawton Langford followed with another single. After Grayson Porter was hit in the helmet, Mitch Price delivered a two-run single up the middle to give the Bears a 3-2 lead. In the seventh, BU loaded the bases again after Hayden Ross was hit by a pitch, Matt Menardsingled and Sheppard walked. With Langford up, a wild pitch scored Ross before the bases were reloaded following Langford's walk. Porter then added the final insurance run on a sacrifice fly.

BU starter Daniel Castano took a no-decision in his first collegiate start, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with one strikeout. The bullpen shined bright for BU as Sean Spicer, Doug Ashby, Ryan Smith and Josh Michaleccombined to hold UTA scoreless over the final 4.2 innings, allowing just one hit and walk with four strikeouts. Ashby (1-0) earned the win with 1.2 innings of perfect relief and two strikeouts. Michalec picked up his second career save and second of the season by throwing a scoreless ninth, giving up a hit and walk with a strikeout.

Taking the loss for UTA was starter Brad Vachon (0-2), who gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts.
