Baylor Head Coach Steve Smith
On the game today:
"I thought we played hard and I thought we competed. We have got some issues on the mound and behind the plate that got exposed. I thought we were fortunate to be in the game with all of those things. We gave them a lot of free opportunities. A lot of base on balls, a lot of hit batters, but we were able to pitch ourselves out of a situation. Some of that is due to inexperience and youth. Defensively, we are playing the game pretty well; it is just an issue at the mound and behind the plate where we just need to do a better job of commanding the game a little bit."
On Baylor's offensive production today:
"We had a lot of good at bats. They made plays. They played exceptionally well defensively. I thought [Grant] Watson was just nails at the beginning of the game and helped himself out a couple of times defensively. He is just an exceptional athlete and reminds me a lot of [Josh] Turley. He is obviously a little bit taller, but they are similar athletes on the mound. I thought offensively we competed very well."
On Grayson Porter being able to start the Baylor rally in the fifth inning:
"He has not gotten a start in a week or so, but he competed. He took a good swing his first time up when he flied out and he battled in that last at-bat. We were facing some quality stuff out there, but he got us going. I thought up and down the lineup there were a lot of good at-bats in the game. We hit some balls at them and finally got some things to fall. They are very good. It is not that they are so phenomenally gifted, the difference is the way you play the game and predominantly on the mound. I thought from Friday to Sunday on the mound I think they showed that -- just a lot of consistency and a lot ability to control the game."
