WACO, Texas -- Wade Mackey pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, and Adam Hornung collected three hits as No. 13 Baylor defeated Texas Southern 10-1 in midweek baseball action Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (4-0) have won 12 of its last 14 regular-season midweek games and improved to 25-6 in such contests since the start of the 2006 season.
Baylor (4-0) scored three runs on two hits, a walk and a Texas Southern (1-3) error in the third. Aaron Miller's RBI double got the scoring started; Hornung followed with an RBI single, and Dickerson plated the third run with a sacrifice fly.
That proved to be all the offense four Baylor pitchers needed. Mackey (1-0) worked into the sixth inning, scattering three hits and three walks with four strikeouts for the win. Tim Matthews got a bases-loaded strikeout in the sixth and then faced the minimum in the seventh. Mace Thurman allowed one unearned on one hit with two strikeouts. Reed Woytek finished the game with a five-pitch scoreless ninth.
In the fifth, Dickerson walked, moved to second on a balk, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on another balk. In the sixth, Beamer Weems had an RBI double and later scored on a Hornung single as the Bears pushed their lead to 6-0.
Texas Southern got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the eighth. Pinch hitter Jeff Nelms reached on an error to leadoff the inning and later scored on Brandon Mikell's pinch-hit RBI single.
Baylor scored four runs without a hit in the bottom of the eighth. Miller walked and later scored on Chris Slater's bases-loaded walk. Andrew Cooley, who earlier reached on a walk, scored on a wild pitch. Baylor's final two runs of the inning scored on a two-out error.
Weems and Ben Booker collected two hits each. Miller was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Every Baylor starter reached safely at least once.
Starter Danilio Carcamo (0-1) took the loss for Texas Southern; he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Four Tiger pitchers issued 10 walks on the night.
Baylor returns to action this weekend, hosting the third-annual QTI Baylor Classic. The Bears face Illinois at 6:30 p.m. CST Friday, Illinois-Chicago at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Stephen F. Austin at 3 p.m. Sunday. Illinois-Chicago and SFA play Friday at 2 p.m., Illinois faces SFA at 2 p.m. Saturday, and Illinois and Illinois-Chicago face each other Sunday at 11 a.m.
