SAN DIEGO - Baylor baseball fell 8-5 to California on Saturday afternoon at the University of San Diego's Fowler Park. The win for Cal (6-2) put an end to BU's (5-3) four-game winning streak.
Baylor was faced with a 4-0 deficit after an RBI single by Devon Rodriguez and three-run home run by Derek Campbell off starter Dillon Newman in the third inning. But Baylor responded in the fourth.
Mitch Price took the first pitch of the fourth deep for a solo homer. Then Adam Toth doubled, Duncan Wendel singled and West Tunnell drove in a run on a ground out. Brett Doe followed by reaching on an error at shortstop to score Toth. An out later, Lawton Langford was hit by a pitch and Darryn Sheppard greeted new Cal pitcher Dylan Nelson with a two-run double to put Baylor ahead 5-4.
Cal answered in the sixth with three runs. It started with Chris Paul reaching on an error. After Doug Ashby entered the game on the mound, Mike Reuvekamp doubled and Devin Pearson was hit by a pitch. An out later, Ashby walked Rodriguez to force in a run and Campbell followed with a two-run double.
Baylor had a chance in the eighth as Tunnell singled and Aaron Dodson had a pinch-hit single with one out. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position, putting the tying run at second base. However, Logan Brown lined out to third and Langford nearly split the right-center gap but it was tracked down.
Newman took a no-decision after throwing five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Ashby (1-1) took the loss after giving up two runs (both unearned) on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts in one inning. Cal's Dylan Nelson (1-0) earned the win in relief with 2.1 scoreless innings and Trevor Hildenberg picked up his second save with a perfect ninth.
